With so many people having one or two bad experienced with Thompson cigars I wonder how they stay in business. Is it that most people when they first get started with Cigars order from them. In my case that what I did. My big problem was getting very dry cigars on my first order that's what turned me off to them.
Are there a lot of people who have not bought from them but just pass the word about how bad they are?

What P.T. Barnum said ...

A new cigar smoker probably sees the low prices and is unaware of the many potential hazards.

It sure ISN'T repeat business! :)

Yeah my first order of cigars was from Thompson, I sent them all back, because the humidor I ordered was incomplete.

I will not be ordering again, their good cigars are 20-30% higher then most other online retailers, and their budget smoked from the one I smoked, nothing special, but worth $1-1.50 I guess....

As for your first question....yes.

As for this, Huh?

I think it is due to the fact that they are a recognizable name amongst new smokers, or even occasional smokers. When they catch wind, there's a new batch of customers placing orders replacing the ones they've lost.

There's a sucker born every minute.

Doc.

...what Doc said, and the fact that Thompson's advertises ruthlessly. You'll see ads for their s#!t stick samplers in New York Times, many major print newspapers, back of some gun magazines, etc. They prey on the folks that are curious about cigars, but don't know jack. That and their "shove it down your throat" sales tactics shows what predators they are.

I just found out history, unfortunately, has misdirected this quotation to P.T. Barnum. It may have been directed at a Barnum show but he didn't say it.

I'm learning. Before I refer to any quote, google it to find out if it has been misdirected.

But it sure applies to Thompson's! ;)

I never purchased from them and hadn't heard of them for many years till my friend ordered from them. I told him that the deal was to good to be true. By the time he got the crappy humidor and cigars, the tobacco beetles already was having a good time. He never ordered from them again.

I have to say that there is something fishy about Thompson's. I recently got a flyer from them with my wifes name on it, my wife only orders (twice) from famous smoke shop and only specific cigars that I request. I wonder how they got her info to send the cigar flyer. Credit card company or famous smoke?

For sure!!! Had a really bad experience... and will never go back. But that was when I didn't know anything... so I think they have enough smart advertising... placed correctly... to survive on the people who don't know better.

I've never used Thompson, but I've heard bad things. I used Cigars International and it was fine. I'm getting ready to place an order with Neptune Cigars . . . has anyone ever used them?

Marketing...no one else markets like those fools in the cigar business. Especially in places where they can get new members to the hobby easy.

I guess Thompson does something good after all. They get new people into the Cigar community. Most seem to leave them for better smokes like I and a lot of others have. But they do pull people in.

I think that getting someone interested in the hobby, having them order sticks and then having the cigars show up packed full of beetles, mold, or of questionable quality would drive people away from the hobby. Either they would think that the cigars taste like butt and therefore do not want to attempt others or else they view them as too high maintenance to prevent beetles and mold, which should never have been their's to deal with in the first place.

I would much rather have people go to a tobaconnist or friend who will sit down with them and help them to understand what to try and how simple it is to care for smokes.

What about cigar.com they seem to have some good daily deals. Any gripes about that place. My next order was going to be from them.

My suggestions would be that you check out some of the retailers here at CP. Try uptown_isy @ Uptown Cigars, JackSchwartz @ Jack Schwartz, NorcalMark @ Tower or Keystone_Raider just to name a few. All of these guys are solid retailers that get consistent repeat business from the BOTLs here @ CP becasue not only are they fellow CPers and BOTLS, but they also offer great customer service, competitive prices and a good selection of cigars. Give them a try...i don't think you will regret it.

A co-worker of mine uses Cigarbid.com. I have never used it before, but you can get great deals on there. It's like ebay, but for cigars.

Agreed x100! I've seen them advertise in local "clippersaver magazines". They also have managed to learn where I live??!? even though I just moved & have not made a cigar purchase yet. I think they probably have a contract w/ USPS and send catalogs to those people who just moved. Thompson's is obnoxious and everyone should stay far, far away from them!

It's a bit late, but I used to order from them alot before Uptown. Top notch shipping, really cool customer service, and the cigars arrived great.
