Ok, I have been into cigars since before the cigar boom of the mid 1990's. Not a daily smoker but I have experienced taste that tells me the difference between the higher end cigars, the mid range, and the doggie sticks.

Switching to pipes, I have a Nording Estate and an original Ben Wade Estate. I have so far smoked several bowls of Peterson Sunset Breeze, Dunhill Early Morning Pipe, 2 bowls of a drug store vanilla mix provided by a friend, and 2 bowls of a local blend called Pipe Makers Blend. I also have some bulk Dunhill Nightcap I haven't tried yet.

Problem is... besides the varying smoke, I can't tell the difference between these so far... no taste on the pallet, nope nadda. It is like smoking Fog.

Anyone else have this experience switching to pipes? Wife lets me smoke pipes in the house so I am not giving up yet but...

If you are having problems, then I say switch to straight out tobacco and see what they individually taste like so that when you smoke blended ones, you may start to detect their presence. Like Perique for example is unique and Latakia. Once you are comfortable with identifying them, then start getting into Tin Tobacco like by Dunhill, CAO, Peterson, and etc etc etc.

You also have to put out of your mind that cigars and pipe tobacco isn't even close in tastes. Once you get past that mental block, maybe you will see what I am talking about. I can say this...pipe tobacco can be very interesting from extremely mild to knock you on your ass and wake up with the feeling you have been raped. For the latter, I can recommend some that will do that to you. Its only 7% Nicotine, but you will tell the difference and this, I promise you.

Avoid the crap that is sold in Walmart, Walgreens, and many other stores like the ones I listed. Go to a real B&M shop that has bulk pipe tobacco and buy that stuff. Usually you will see the types of tobacco listed on the container, but not always. They also will have names that stick out like Clint Eastwood, Dalton Gang, and other names. They also generally will cost no more than $3 an ounce from my experience. I highly recommend the B&M shops as they tend to be sold as universal bulk tobaccos but with different names is all.

But if you need help selecting some, I can always arrange a nice selection for you to try. Several others on the forum have tasted what I've picked out for them and I haven't heard any complaints so far.

You and I are in the same boat, 'cept I can't smoke in the house.......

I haven't given up yet, but see myself not going out of my way to experiment too awful much.

Loren makes some great points on tobacco tasting and blends.

I initially started smoking the pipe because of the winter months and being able to pack a small bowl, not get negative comments on the smell from the wife and unwind before bed. Don't feel rushed to pick up on certain flavors or give-up the pipe altogether. Experiment as time permits and your palette will develop and along the way you will pick up on some favorites. As with cigars, smoke what you like and fugg anyone elses opinon.

I have only been piping for 6-7 months. Whether I smoke a bowl or a cigar boils down to pure mood. With the spring weather arriving I would guess that I smoke 5 cigars for every bowl of tobacco smoked. I am still at a point where I would take a good cigar over a good bowl any day. At the same time, I find myself appreciating the pipe more and more with the passing of time. Both sure beat the hell out of cigarettes!!!

I started smoking a pipe before cigars and even though I currently spend more time with a cigar in my mouth than a pipe I still enjoy it from time to time. The biggest hurtle for me was to figure out what types of tobacco I liked. I found the english blends to be to my liking such as Penzance which has a very strong flavor and then something like a Frog Morton or Frog Morton on the Bayou which is much lighter. Burleys too are not to bad now and then. In general though I find that pipe smoking deserves a bit more attention to flavor and of course the attention to keep the think lit.

I second Mr. Peats points on the picking up some straight tobac tins and finding out what you like. Then take that and go check out some tobacco review sites to find out what is similar and thought of highly.

Good luck to you.

Gunpowder and Matt...If you two want a decent selection of pipe tobacco....just say the word and I will pick out a nice starter set to get you going on this quest. I've done this for a few other CP'ers and have heard positive results.

Gunpowder If your name wasn't next to your post I would swear it was written by me. I am in the same boat I can't taste a thing but I can with my cigars, and same as far as the wifey lets me smoke the pipe in the house but not cigars. I have tried decent tobacco I think but nothing. I will be following this thread so if you get any pointers or reasons for the lack of flavor I will hopefully learn too. Good luck with the pipe.

I've already taken Gunpowder and Matt R into Pipe tobacco school 101. They may or may not like what I started the selection out. But I will be able to get their packages out tomorrow. :D

Will report back on my progress towards my education.

I can't smoke anything Sunday as I am doing a cardio something-or-other test next Monday morning. they said no caffeine or tobacco prior to the test. I assume I will be on a treadmill, etc. training for the mission to mars.

I assume they don't allow one to smoke cigars while taking the test.... probably not pipes either.

I am anew pipe guy as well. Just my first pipe today. Got it online some gift set. Didnt want to drop a ton of $$ till I see if i like it. I went to my local B&M and he wanted to sell me a 350 dollar pipe said that was a starter pipe.. Anyway here is the tins I got with it.founders reserve. Da Vinci in fumo Blue note. So far they are ok. I want something with a sweet tatse to it. So spit some out and I go and get them ASAP> I was trying a pipe for the rides home in the afternoon and at work. I am self employed I buy and flip homes so the smell doesnt bother anybody.

I have to get some baggies to split this tobacco up Matt and Gunpowder. Luckily payday is tomorrow morning so I will get this stuff out before I head to KC tomorrow morning.

Look out Matt and Gunpowder. A nice selection just went out today. Looking forward to hearing what you think of the selection. I think there is 11 samples.

if they are smoking out of new pipes would that effect the taste as well?
in my experience (which isn't alot) you don't experience full flavor untill you have broken in your new pipes.
