I used the search function to find a similar post, but could only find ones about other lighter types. While a lot of people don't like to use cigarette lighters for lighting duty, I have a nifty tool that uses regular butane disposable lighters, but alters them to improve the flame. The flame on this looks more like an expensive lighter's flame, as opposed to the 99cent disposables, and supposedly burns at 2500 degrees Fahrenheit. <--That is bs, as I tried it on aluminum (which has a melting point of only 1220 F) for a good amount of time, with no change in the aluminum. Despite using disposables, this lighter has never failed me in getting a good light. Here are some pictures of it:

What makes it great is the price. I found this particular one for only 5 dollars at my local hardware store. Then the replacement lighters can be bought for about a dollar for 5 lighters (at the checkout at walgreens or similar), and last for a decent amount of time.

Does that have a brand name? And is the hardware store that carries those part of a chain? Those would make a great item for the frequent flyer to carry so as not to run afoul of the all the flight restrictions of carrying lighters in your luggage...just carry the shroud and pop in a disposable BIC at your destination...cheap enough to throw the BIC away before your return flight...

The particular brand that I have is "Master Appliance", but I have seen them before in a Sears catalog or similar, under different names. I never thought of the flying situation, that is a great idea.

Is the hardware store a chain such as Home Depot, Ace, or Tru Value?

Edited for PS

PS - Found Master Appliance torches and heat guns on the web...does that have a model number?

Neat - but isn't the point not to use butane (in any form) because it screws with the flavor of the cigar? I'm asking, I honestly don't know just going on various other "lighter" posts.

wow, that is a great innovation.

turns a regular butane lighter into a torch lighter!

Hey if anyone finds a good, cheap source, post up, maybe we coudl even do a group buy.

Butane is fine and is used in most higher end lighters, including Colibri.

Most cigar smokers will steer clear of lighters that work on lighter fluid, though. Zippo, for example.

I was confusing lighter fluid and butane. Not sure how, but I was. Thanks stevehawk.

You can also find those at the electronics store. I don't know about Radio Hack, but some others might have them. They are used for shrink wrap and supposedly soddering. But they do make fine cigar lighters as well.

Here's a link LIGHTER

Look at the bottom of the page they write "Refillable Fuel Cell (Model # RC-31)". That crack's me up. :sign:

Edit to add link to buy for $15.65

Oooh! That one looks a lot better than mine. The hardware store in my town is part Ace/part Radio Shack, so that is probably why mine was there as well. Thanks for the link to that microtorch!

And I discovered your's is model MT-10...

Model MT-10

It appears that the difference between the two models is the MT-11 uses the refillable fuel cell that come with it but the MT-10 can use a standard sized butane lighter...seeing as I fly frequently I am going to have to go find one of these...if I find out the difference between the two models I'll pass it on...my guess is that Home Depot will have it as Master Appliance makes a lot of stuff for the handyman...

Ok when I looked at this page:

http://www.masterappliance.com/microu.html

It's for the MT-11, and listed under it is the "refillable fuel cell" which at least LOOKs like just a regular lighter. When you click on THAT link, you get:

http://www.masterappliance.com/rc31.html

Which contains the text

Use as a refillable fuel cell in Microtorch Models MT-11, MT-10,
UT-10 and MT-30

So what I'd like to make sure of is that the "refillable fuel cell" can indeed be replaced with a regular disposable lighter of the same shape and size. Cos if so, the way to go would be to just buy the cheapest model you could fine (MT11 OR MT10) and go from there.

Thoughts?

So when I put one of those in my cart and tried to check out the s&h was $11 and change! So I sent off an email asking for a break on shipping.

I also asked if local pickup is available; it's in Chantilly, VA. It's close enough for me to drive, but I am sure there are other members that are even closer.

About a year ago I participated in a cigar pass on this site where the person initiating the pass gave one of these to each in the pass. As I recall he said that Radio Shack had the item and decided to drop it from their catalog. He bought out his local store at a discount. I don't recall the name of the person that started the pass.
