Chimay

The Chimay Brewery ("Bières de Chimay") is a Belgian brewery founded inside Scourmont Abbey, in the Belgian municipality of Chimay in 1862.[1] The brewery produces three widely distributed ales and a patersbier exclusively for the monks; they are known as Trappist beers because they are made in a Trappist monastery. The brewing plant was updated in 1988, and now produces 120,000 hectolitres annually.

Since 1876 the monastery has also made cheese, and currently offers four cheeses.

Picked up a rack of this....

Chimay Bleue (Blue), 9% abv darker ale. In the 75 cl bottle, it is known as Grande Réserve. This copper-brown beer has a creamy head and a slightly bitter taste. Considered to be the "classic" Chimay ale, it exhibits a considerable depth of fruity, peppery character. The taste continues to evolve and develop with a few years of age, and is extremely popular with the Belgian population.

Orval

Orval Abbey is a Cistercian monastery founded in 1132 in the Gaume region of Belgium and is located in Villers-devant-Orval, part of Florenville in the province of Luxembourg. The abbey is well-known for its history and spiritual life but also for its local production of a Trappist beer (see Brasserie d'Orval) and a specific cheese.

and a rack of this....

Orval Trappist Ale, 6.2% ABV often referred to as The Queen of Trappists. It was first made in 1931, and has a complex and unusual flavor and aroma produced by a unique strain of yeast. The beer is light in color, slightly cloudy, and has a large, foamy head. There is a complex aroma of leather, horse blanket, spice, and many other earthy components.

For a party tomorrow afternoon.

Life is grand

Out of curiosity Tim, what do those run over there? They're about $4-5 a bottle for the little bottles here.

The Chimay Blue is my latest purchase. $13 for a large bottle, so this beer has a lot of expectations to live up to. I had a pint of my first Chimay at a restaurant but I don't know which brew it was. I remember it being heavy on the cloves though.
