Advice for beginners cigar palate

A lot of great advice here. Two more things I'd recommend as I think back to when I started... One, as grateful1 said, smoke what you like. I can't agree with this more. Don't get caught up into buying expensive cigars because that's what everyone else is talking about. If you like a $2 cigar, great! I miss those times. Just don't try to grow up too quickly. Two, when trying cigars, it often helps to try 2-3 of the same cigar before making strong conclusions on it - especially if you're rather new. From one day to the next, a cigar can kinda hit differently (for a variety of reasons).

@grateful1 put it pretty succinctly, but hit the nail on the head. I've been smoking cigars semi-regularly for 25+ years and I have never once tasted any of the flavor notes that I read in reviews. I try a lot of different sticks. Back in the day, if I liked one I would stick the ring in my wallet so I could remember later what it was. Now you can just snap a pic of it. If you like one, buy more. If you don't like one, maybe give it one or two more shots. If you still don't like it, don't buy any more.

I wholeheartedly agree with the others here who have said cigar smoking is more about the experience and/or what you pair it with. I've gotten just as much enjoyment out of smoking a cheap stick on the golf course with friends as I have smoking an expensive cigar paired with a nice bourbon.
