Okay guys I am gonna need a little help a family member has a 17 cubic foot chest freezer that hasn't worked in a long time and is just collecting dust in their garage. And tonight as I was watching the plume I got to thinking on making it into a humi. Now since todays technology and the way things are going is Spanish cedar still needed. Since there is pads and beads and all sorts of things like that seriously is the cedar still needed. Or is it fine with the way some cigar boxes are constructed of if they have Spanish cedar inside or course. Since it just started milling in the brain tonight some ideas would be a great asset. Since there are so many knowledgeable people in the forum

Thanx

The main purpose of the spanish cedar is it's ability to quickly bring your humidity level back. Spanish cedar will absorb and hold the moisture and release it back in to it's environment to equalize the humidity.

With that being said - beads and other humidification devices work great and will do the job - the issue will be that when you open the vessel, your humidity will be lost and the ability to recharge will rest solely on the beads or other humidification devices. Typically, the spanish cedar will greatly assist this process to restore the humidity to the proper level.

It will work fine, but.... there will be dramatic changes in your RH when you open the door and your RH will have to build back up.... and your beads or other humidification devices will require more maintenance.

It would work much like the "coolidors" which have become popular. Consider the spanish cedar as RH insulation. If your home had no insulation, the heater would be running constantly.... and then when you open the door, all the heat that you've been building up would be gone.... and your furnace would have to work that much harder.... But, you can stay warm that way.....

Well done. What he said.

And cedar tends to be the most absorbent wood that taste good along with the tobacco taste. The more you age them in cedar boxes, the more you will have wood as one of the flavors.

As stated the cedar will help keep the humidity in check, but this is also dependent on how full the chest is.

Boxes and cigars themselves will also act as a humidty buffer, so if it is full it will help. The amount of dead air inside will change your humidity fluctuations.

If the thing is near empty, when you lift that massive lid all the air is going to woosh out, and new air will be swept in. That essentially means your humid air is gone and outside air is added. You're going to need a lot of buffer to keep the humidity stable, I would think. Perhaps some active humidification in addition to beads and whatnot...but I'm no specialist in that area.

Maybe you could use some of those large plastic storage bins to organize the contents and add some empty ones to fill the space. That would be one way to reduce the volume of air that the humidification system has to humidify.

Just organizing them in their respective boxes (if cedar) will do that for you and still allow the cigars to breath- putting sealed containers inside would set you up to run the risk of mold possibly. If you have alot of singles you can always go and get empty boxes from your local tobacconist

Sounds like you could have a very cool project that will let you store alot of product....:o) Good Luck!!!

Cheers,

R

On another forum, there was a member who converted an old chest-style Coke machine about that size to a humidor. He lined the whole thing with cedar by cutting up cigar boxes---installed label side showing. Came out pretty darn cool!

Never thought about that. I guess the boxes would need to be unfinished on the label side up.

I think what he did, now that I think about it, was line the chest floor and sides with the box bottoms, and the underside of the lid with the labelled tops, a lot of which were from unvarnished boxes.

I did some reading on the internet it turns out that Mahogany is in the same family called Cedrela and so close to spanish cedar it only has a few differences such as bug deterents and the scent it gives off that enriches the taste of smokes and a few other things. But as far as humidity it will do the same as Spanish cedar. I think if the interior of the humi was made totally out of Mahogany and used veneer strips ofset by an equal amount of inches it will work. Guess will have to give it a shot

If you like, for 10 bucks+ shipping I'll send you a bag of Spanish Cedar shavings. I save the shavings when I run SC through my planer. It will at least give you the aroma.

I have to ask....do you charge your clients for materials and labor, or just for the finished product? I feel it's safe to say that materials have to be included in the price of the humi. So basically what you're doing is charging someone for Spanish Cedar boards, making their humi, cleaning up the shavings, and offering us bags of cedar shavings for $10 + s&h for something that's already been paid for by someone else??

No wonder you turned your hobby into a business!

He's just re-purposing waste product that would otherwise be thrown away. This is a very common practice across all industries, to try to turn the waste product from their primary activity into an asset. I say bravo.

Yeah, but HM isn't in an industry, it's a hobby. This is a cigar forum we're not customers, customers go to the industry. When the industry goes to the customer, it's called advertising.

If he wants to sell something to someone, he should offer via PM instead of advertising his wares in multiple threads... there's a forum for that located here.

Well that is a perfectly reasonable proposition. I agree if he is going to develop his hobby into a profitable enterprise, even on a small scale, he needs to segregate his personal conduct on the board from his commercial efforts. Still, its nice to see somebody transforming something they love into something they can make money from. As Steve Jobs said, "I don't think of my life as a career. I do stuff. I respond to stuff. That's not a career - it's a life!"

You've been here for what....2 weeks?? You have no clue as to what's going on here. This is a whole lot deeper than just shavings. If you don't know the whole story or what you're talking about, you need to stay out of the conversation.

You've obviously not been paying attention either. HM does most of his posting in the retailers forum because he is a retailer. When he first came here, he was a "hobbyist" that quickly turned into a business with the prospect of a cigar forum as a clientèle. So, no he shouldn't be offering things via pm, but through the retailers forum like you stated.

Before you go correcting someone, make sure that you're also right and know the full story!
