A very different tray

Some have been calling my trays "art". I am uncomfortable with that but I thought I could make some moves in the "art" direction with some more scuptural pieces. I realised that I could take advantage of the height dimension more than I have been and here is a first effort. It was a great deal more work than any of the others done so far.

It is a piece of figured beech with evidence of insect burrowing on the lower back. (I left it because I thought it was visually interesting.) There are four grooves for sticks. This only has a first coat of oil but I am looking for some feedback.

So, is it worth trying another, more vertical tray, or not? I am sure it will be nothing like this one because the wood will dictate what can be done.

Thanks for looking!

I think it looks pretty good.
If it were mine, I would only the grooves on each end not the ones on the side.

That said, it is a damn fine looking ashtray.

Well, I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder and after seeing various forms of crap passed of as "art" I must say, yet again, that these are in fact ART. When someone throws paint on a canvas or a arranges for a large crowd of people to be nude in some public fourm and that is called art and if you don't get it then your not opened minded enough. So color me old school, one some one takes a piece of material and with his own hands (and tools) makes it into a functional and attractive piece then to me that is art.

This tray would be perfect for a tall, thin bar table that is only accessible from one side since it only has grooves from the one side.

I know your just trying to be humble Dave, but allow us to give you credit for some nice "handy" work.

I like it a lot. I think the insect burrowing gives it more character. I love the way pecky(?) cypress looks.

I like it Dave! Although with a bit of tweaking on another version, I could easily envision the short grooves working as a pipe holder. What do you think?

I like it. Kind of reminds me of a mountain range in the background with a place for a cigar on each side and a lake of ashes. :D The "peaks" could even be left rougher/natural, depending on the type/cut of wood.

Great work.

You are RIGHT by golly!! Even this one could easily have a groove changed to hold a pipe!

Thanks Tim!!
