Friday night, I went out to dinner with some friends to celebrate both mine and my wife's birthdays. My brother, who is starting to become somewhat of a beer snob, came through with a VERY cool gift.
In the card he talks about pairing of wine and food (something I like to try and do from time to time with the wife) and how pairing beer with food instead is for those with more refined palettes. It was very funny stuff, and as we were reading it, he explained to us how drunk he was when he wrote it.
Inside the gift bag was four bottles. Each bottle had a sticky attached to it with tasting notes and pairing suggestions. The four: Three Philosophers 2008, Ommegang Chocolate Indulgence, Brooklyner-Schneider Hopfen-Weisse, and Allagash Curieux ale aged in oak bourbon barrels. All are beers he's had and loved, and the Three Philosophers is perfect, because I grabbed two bottles from 2005 (that I talked about in another thread), and was looking forward to trying them side by side to compare.
Even beyond the selection, I thought the addition of the tasting notes and pairing suggestions was outstanding.
