Sept 21, 2005 is my 1 year anniversary of foot surgery on my right foot. I waited about 25 years (had surgery on both feet in 1973, although they were better, the right one was always ornery) to get it fixed. The surgery started off as an hour or so, off work for a week and good to go in a month. As I completed the pre-surgery tests (x-rays, MRI, physical evaluation), the scope of the surgery grew to three separate procedures (like fixing an old car or an old house, the doctor just kept adding fixes with "well, while we're in there, we might as well...."). In the end, the surgery last 5 hours, I had 5 separate incisions on my foot (42 stitches, 2 screws), I was in the hospital for 3 days and off work for 2 months. The doctor promised me I would be "all better" in one year. That's 9/21/05! While I'm not yet "all better", I'm way better than I used to be!
I promised myself during the rehab (6 weeks, 4-6 hours/day) that I would treat myself to something special when it was all over. We'll...I'm calling it! It's as close to "over" as it's gonna get!
To celebrate, I'm buying myself a couple of boxes of nice cigars. A few cigars from the islands have been drifting my way thanks to the buyers club I'm in, so this purchase will focus on cigars for US consumers.
I'm seriously considering a box of Diamond Crown Maximus Robustos as box number 1. For box number 2, Padron Anniversary 1964 Principe. Generally, I like the robust/corona size or smaller. The bigger cigars are too hard to fit into my schedule (time-wise).
I'm open to other ideas. I've never had a Padron 1926, that's why they aren't on the list. I've smoked a couple of Ashton VSG's and was underwhelmed. I recently had a well aged Excalibur and it was excellent (what it lacked in visual appeal by being a "good value" cigar was more than made up for with a very yellowed cellphane wrapper!), but they aren't in the same class as the "celebration cigars" I've listed above. Few other non-isoms have really "wowed" me. I have a coolidor full of "good value" cigars, so this purchase is to round the "collection" with a few higher end pieces.
Suggestions? Comments? References to a reputable place with good prices for these cigars?
Ideally, I'd like to buy them both at the same time, from the same place, but it isn't critical.
Appreciate the help!
Cheers,
Joe
