A Few Humidification Questions

I'm a noob setting up a small desktop humidor. I seasoned it, seems to be doing OK. I am using one of those little gel jars. One thing I did (wrong I think), is I put DW in the jar right away, then I read later that you only need to do that when the crystals shrink. Did I mess up? The DW is all gone now, not visible in the jar.

Next question(s):

Some places I read say to use PG, generally, for humidification, and other places say DW. Are they interchangeable/why would I want to use PG?

What does "RO" stand for?

Also, I'm a little confused about the terms "crystals" "gel" "beads" etc. (maybe others, you tell me). Even on the little jar I've got, it calls the contents both gel and crystals. Are they one and the same?

Thanks for helping a newbie out.

Welcome!

First things fist. Go here and read the newbie guide, post an intro, etc.

Then if you do a little bit of searching in the humidor thread you'll find LOADS of info. on the questions you have. CP is a great place and a wealth of information if you do some searching and the questions you have are prob some of the most common concerns from newbies! Being a bit of a newb still myself I can speak from experience :sign:

One thing I learned here which has changed my life (seriously) and you will find everyone here can vouch for: ditch the gel, get the beads.

Enjoy your stay!
Greg

Thanks for the link to the guide for this forum, bluue... I'd like to stay on topic in this thread though. I already searched, didn't find exactly what I was looking for. So looking forward to a post in this thread addressing my newbie humidor questions. Thanks again for the welcome.

Try searching again, trust me, this topic has been covered a lot.
Also just make sure you read through and follow the directions in the newbie guide that I linked you to.
You're not going to get too much more info before you introduce yourself and fill out your profile. Its just how things are done here.

I love forums where pages and pages are devoted to admonishing members to "Use the Search!" -- when a fraction of that time, energy, and server space could have been used to actually answer the OP's post. I could see it if there was a FAQ that the member could read, but that does not apply in this case. Silly.

And the same time you used posting your last two posts in this thread could have been used posting an introduction, as is tradition here. Best of luck in your search for a forum you like.

I know I shouldn't but I just have to get it off my chest because I am getting so sick of seeing this happen time and time again lately-

You came looking for help, and that is exactly what you got. Help to point you in the right direction. Yet, for some reason you don't seem to think that you need to follow the same exact process that anyone who is a member here has had to follow. You even proclaimed yourself a newbie. Well then, sir fellow newbie, please follow the rules that are in the guide. You have not been "admonished" to use the search, you have been politely instructed. You are not the only person in the history of CP who has been told to do so.

Don't just show up and expect things to be handed to you. That's not how it works here. You need to tell the community (notice that key word)a little about yourself, spend some time letting us get to know you, and then we'll be more than happy to help you out. EVERYONE who is a member here has had to follow these same rules. I'm sorry you did not get the immediate gratification you were looking for. I tried to be nice and help you avoid making the same mistake that others have in the past but it doesn't seem that is how you wanted things to play out.

I probably just added fuel to the fire but I've gotten tired of sitting back and watching people be so ignorant of the guidelines and advice of others.

I'll go be quiet for a bit now.

ETA: Sorry everyone if I stepped out of line here being a newbie and all. Let me know if I did. I just got a little fed up.

This has nothing to do with 'instant gratification'. I'm a veteran of Internet forums. I know how to search. I'm not lazy. In fact I did perform a search, and mentioned as much in my post. Your only response was, "Trust me, it's there, search again." Huh?

Is this the way you treat someone looking for information?

Plus, you say my questions are asked all the time, yet you have no FAQ.

I'm sorry, but in less than five minutes after this unfortunate experience, I had polite, cheerful answers to my questions from a different forum - and they were probably buried in their site someplace too, if only I had spent more time "searching." But that site didn't mind helping out a noob.

The focus of this site seems to be on protocol - i.e., form over substance. That's fine. I found out early enough. The most valuable advice I've received was from another poster above who wished me well finding another site. I've already done it!

The good luck to be wished here is for this site in its attempt to attract and retain new members. Bye.

We got plenty of those, not much loss! Also, this forum is very different from any other. And for good reason. Too bad you couldn't find out why eventually.

Shoot. I miss all the good threads. Damned school.

Trey
