Since this is my 1000th post, I think a little contest is in order. The rules are:

  • I am the sole judge. Should there be any disagreement with what I claim are the correct answers, I will attempt to prove the answer I give as being correct with a web-link, a picture, a sound clip, whatever.
  • You are allowed 1 post and 1 post only with your guesses, edited posts will be disqualified, so think and post carefully.
  • Anyone I know not to be an asshat is eligible, regardless of your number of posts. If I don’t know you, you MUST be a member in good standing of THIS board for 2 months or more and you MUST have a minimum of 100 posts on THIS board and not be an asshat.
  • This contest will close when someone gets all the answers correct. If nobody gets all correct, the contest will be considered closed at 11:59 PM, Friday, November 30th and I will choose a winner by who answered the most correct, and in a case of a tie, the closest to the correct number on the tie breaker question.
  • The prize package will be a fine selection of smokes from my humis, ranging from popular everyday sticks, to premiums and some “from the dark side”.

OK, so the theme of this contest is one of my passions, music. Some questions will be about music itself, some may be about musicians or their equipment. Some of the questions are simple and anyone with a basic knowledge of my favourite genre will know them, some will probably require some searching and some are be downright obscure. Have fun:

  1. This Canadian band ranks 76th in US Record sales according to the RIAA and has a total or 24 gold and 14 platinum records world wide.
  2. Name the song from which these lyrics come: “When masturbation’s lost it’s fun, you’re a fuckin’ loser”
  3. What’s the name of the blind guitarist who played in the movie “Road House”?
  4. Each of the members of Led Zeppelin has adopted a “symbol” that means something special to them. What’s Jimmy Page’s symbol?
  5. What guitarist has a tattoo of himself somewhere on his body??
  6. A Led Zeppelin song makes reference to a character in a well known series of books that became a successful movie series. Name the song, and post an “EXACT” quote of the lyrics making the reference.
  7. What was my very first rock album:
    Black Sabbath – Paranoid?
    Led Zeppelin II
Uriah Heep – The Magicians Birthday
Pink Floyd – Dark Side Of The Moon
  8. What song contains the following lyrics: “When you think about death, do you lose your breath, or do you keep your cool? Would you like to see the Pope at the end of a rope, do you think he’s a fool?”
  9. In my opinion, the most recognizable guitar intros in Rock music (in no particular order) are Smoke On The Water, Voodoo Chile, Stairway To Heaven, Free Bird and this song (tabulature):
-----------------15---------14-------
-----15------------------------------
---------14--12------14-----------14-
%-12--------------------------------%
-------------------------------------
-------------------------------------

------------------15--------14-------
------15-----------------------------
---------14--12--------14---------14-
%-14--------------------------------%
-------------------------------------
-------------------------------------
  10. On the DVD Guns ‘n Roses – Use Your Illusion Tour, what’s the drummer’s name and what brand of kit does he play?
  11. Rolling Stones DVD Bridges to Babylon, 2 questions, each worth 1 point:
1./ On the intro to the song Out of Control, Mick says be bought the coat where??
2./ On the song Sympathy For The Devil, Mick counts in the band (with his back to the audience) because the lyrics start off beat. How far do you actually see him count??
  12. Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath fame uses an interesting tuning on his guitar. Standard guitar tuning calls for the top (biggest) string to be E. What’s his “Standard” tuning for this string on most songs??
  13. Black Sabbath recorded 6 albums with Ozzy in the early years. Name the 2nd and the 5th (in order of release date).
  14. Who was the vocalist in Black Sabbath immediately after Ozzy?
  15. ACDC picked up Brian Johnson as vocalist after the death of who??? (Jeez, this is so easy.)
  16. Deep Purple – Made in Japan was recorded in what city (cities)??
  17. Joe Walsh of Eagles fame also recorded several albums with what 3 piece band??
  18. Who wrote and recorded a song in memory of his son, who unfortunately fell to his death, and what was the song?
  19. Flint, Michigan’s musical claim to fame is Grand Funk Railroad. They released an album in 1971 with an interesting “jacket”. What was the name of this album and what was the exact date of the North American release??
  20. The guitarist for the Canadian Rock Group “Mahogany Rush” is ….?

The tie breaker question is:

How many active SKUs (Stock Keeping Units) are in the Warehouse I purchase for and Manage???

Dayum, you guys are good, but not perfect. All in all, you've still impressed me.

I will say that even though #5 isn't the answer I had in mind, I will state now that Sam Rivers is correct. I didn't know the tattoo on Slash's right bicep had boobs!!!!

Thanks for the contest!

Edit to reflect your post while I was searching.

I've been a reader of this forum forever -- just not big on the internet stuff, just recently registered due to grateful1 telling me to do so. And I'm definitely not an asshat.... so here goes nothing!

1. Rush
2. Greenday - Longview
3. Jeff Healey
4. The ZoSo
5. Sam Rivers/Slash (get it.... slash Slash)
6. "Ramble On" --- "Twas in the darkest depths of Mordor I met a girl so fair, but Gollum and the evil one crept up and slipped away with her"
7. Led Zeppelin II
8. Black Sabbath - After Forever
9. Guns N Roses - Sweet Child Of Mine
10. Matt Sorum, Yamaha Drums
11. YESS... I have this DVD:
Part 1: He says "so I went over to the mall and bought this especially for you... cause I'm out of control"
Part 2: You really only see him hold up a single finger and then he turns and starts singing
12. That string is C#.
13. Paranoid, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
14. Ronnie James Dio
15. Bon Scott
16. Osaka, Tokyo -- both Japan
17. James Gang
18. Eric Clapton - Tears In Heaven
19. E Pluribus Funk, 11-15-71
20. Frank Marino

Bonus:

Uhhh.... ? 560?

If you don't let me win -- I had fun anyway. Shit -- I edited the post to add the "if you don't let me win" line... is that ok? LOL.

Edit 2: If you do let me win, I'll donate half the cigars back with my own contest or giveaway... spread the love, man. :D

Sunday morning **BUMP**.

Come on people, there must be more than 4 out there who enjoy music enough to enter. There's some close, but nobody perfect yet.

Also, I must remind you that there's to be no edited posts.

Any more guesses??

I may cut this contest short as I may be in Detroit Thursday after work, and that will probably be the last time for a couple of weeks. So as a matter of convenience, and to make sure the package gets out to the winner in a reasonable amount of time, this may be necessary.

Am I disqualified for adding the lines at the bottom and I edited it before anyone else posted :( ?

snip....
I may cut this contest short as I may be in Detroit Thursday after work, and that will probably be the last time for a couple of weeks. So as a matter of convenience, and to make sure the package gets out to the winner in a reasonable amount of time, this may be necessary.

As noted above, I will be cutting this contest short and it will close at 11:59 PM TONIGHT. I'll announce the winner tomorrow morning and the package will go USPS tomorrow afternoon, assuming no issues crossing the River.

OK, contest has come to a close. Thanks to the 4 members who played. I was kind of hoping for more but that didn't happen.

The correct answers are as follows:
  1. Rush
  2. Longview - Green Day
  3. Jeff Healy
  4. Zoso
  5. Sam Rivers (I had intended Slash, on his right bicep. But as I noted above, I didn't realize that tatoo had boobs (so technically, it isn't one of himself) and before the contest, I didn't even know who Sam Rivers was.
  6. Ramble On - Led Zeppelin
  7. Uriah Heep – The Magicians Birthday
  8. After Forever - Black Sabbath
  9. Sweet Child Of Mine - Guns 'n Roses
  10. Matt Sorum is correct - There are several references on the DVD showing the Yahama logo on the kit.

  11. Part 1 - Mick says "So I went over to the mall and bought this, especially for you....." (Awesome tune, by the way)
Part 2 - On that intro, you see him hold the index finger on his right hand as he mouths the number "one" and then the lyrics start on a 5 count. So the answer is 1.
  12. The top E string IS tuned down 1-1/2 steps to a C#. This is one I'm amazed everyone got right. I posted it because I knew it, but I guess Google is a wonderful thing isn't it?
  13. Paranoid was the second album by Black Sabbath, and was released in '70 in the UK, with a '71 release in the US. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was their 5th, released in '73.
  14. Ronnie James Dio
  15. Bon Scott (I always love discussions on who was better)
  16. Osaka & Tokyo
  17. James Gang
  18. Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven
  19. E Pluribus Funk - November of '71
  20. Frank Marino

Out of 4 members who played, unfortunately, 2 didn't see my note about "edited posts being disqualified" in the 2nd bullet point in the rules, so technically, by my own rules, only 2 are eligible.

Out of those 2, insight got the most right. Congrats dude and a package will be winging it's way to you this afternoon, provided I get a PM with your addy before 1:00 PM today, I didn't look at your profile to see if it was there. If you don't see this request today, the package WILL be on it's way to you next time I'm in Detroit, but that may be a week or 2.

Once again, thanks to all who played, and sorry about the editing part, but so be it!

Congrats Insight, you got this one from me! Live by the rules, die by the rule. So be it. ! :p

Hey, what is the answer to the tie-breaker?

Awesome, thanks Newfie! The GnR tab was a gimme because that was the first song I consciously decided to learn to play on guitar. I was looking at the tablature thinking "hmmmmm that sure is familiar...."

Forgot to post that your package went out Thursday afternoon from Madison Heights, MI on DC # 0307 1790 0000 8196 9183. I would guess you'll receive it today.

Enjoy
