Who is the man in the picture? Why is he on the cover of Time? What did he do that made him important?

Hints will of course follow.

Who is the man in the picture?
John Roderigo Dos Passos

Why is he on the cover of Time?
Because of the release of the third novel in a series called "The Big Money", the others being "The 42nd Parallel" and "1919".

What did he do that made him important?
He chronicalled the unofficial history of the US from 1900-1929, in the series of three books that were part history and part fiction.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!!!

Technically Volusianator won....

Figured out Time's picture naming system eh? :) Good job

Damn Time magazine naming mechanism.

Yes, The Volusianator won it. But to keep in line with my rules I’m going to add to the contest. Wade, you get the smokes, but you must swear to at least look at Dos Passos’ USA trilogy before you enjoy them.

I’d make you read it all, but 1000 + pages is a little much to ask. Just look at the beginning of any of his sections to try and see what he was doing with newsreels, poetry, and fiction, it’s pretty amazing stuff, and you can actually read the book online with amazon.com’s search inside feature. Here it is.USA

I’ll also take a look at your wish list to see what the mystery cigar should be and send it out today.

Congratulations Wade.

Now I have to think of a harder contest.

Let me tell you, it was not easy finding that cover. The Mrs. and I looked at literally hundreds of Time covers last night about 1:00am! It was a fun project, thanks for the challenge. And yes, I will take a look at the Triology! (If I remember correctly, it's 1449 pages)!

Am I stupid (don't answer that) because I have no idea what you are all talking about. ???

Look at the image name : "1101360810_400.jpg"

The 1101 - not sure of

36 is the year (1936)

0810 is the issue date

400 is the image size (this is the larger image, not the thumbnail)

Just go to the Past Cover archive, search for 8/10/36, and BINGO ;)

(I searched a couple hundred issue covers before figuring out that checking the image properties would probably make it easier :p )

Well daymn, don't I feel like an idiot. Wish I would've known that, we literally looked at hundreds of covers. Funny thing is, we started in the 50's and the covers were drawings, not photos, so we kept getting more current. Then the Mrs. noticed the scrolly stuff around the pic and we started going backwards, sure enough, we got back into actual photographs in earlier issues. It was a fun journey none the less.
