TOPIC TITLE: 5 Vegas Classic (AKA Dog Rocket)

TOPIC DESCRIPTION: Wrapper Shade: Turd Brown, Origin: Fido's Rear End

Accompanying Drink: The champagne of BEIRS (Miller High Life for the uninformed)

Well, I was told that these were no good, and I am here to tell you firsthand that it is true.

Vitola: Torpedo (You know even on one end tapering down to where it was pinched off by the ...well you get the idea...) 6x50 (I'd say probably cocker spaniel size)

Strength/Flavor: Medium/nonexistant

The smell of this out of the cello wasn't too bad, good tobacco-y/musty hay smell. The cut was a little rough due to the stem that got in the way of my knife (my punch wasn't going to work)

The construction was excellent, nice and springy, no hard spots, consistent throughout the length even through the taper.

The pre-light draw was more than passable, good tobacco flavor, fresh cut hay that has been out in full sun for 5 or 6 hours. I was pleasantly surprised and was hoping that I could write a good review; but alas, it would have been better to not light it at all (too bad I have another one).

Right off the bat I found that this was not a good cigar. My first draw was harsh and bitter causing the floodgates to open, the result was to fight the urge to spit  . This continued through the entire smoke (that was one torturous hour). I tried various draw strengths and purged every 3-4 draws, but to no avail. The fist draw after a purge was best, usually touches of hay and tobacco. Towards the end of the first third, I got some spice, but it did not last.

The ash was a wonderful light gray that held on for two inches before falling.

I was ready to let this thing die out, but I was holding out hope that it would get better. Besides, how a I supposed to write a complete review after just two inches.

The second third was no better, So I continued my 3-4 draws and then a purge. Every once in a while, I would have a draw that did not require me to spit after letting the smoke out, but those were few and far between. On the ones that weren't searing my tongue with bitterness, I got a little spice and some serious tobacco flavor.

Towards the end of the second third, the ash fell again (almost another two inches), and I was about ready to hang it up. After a purge and another crappy draw that was getting hot (and I was drawing VERY slowly), I decided to set it down and let it die (besides, my beer was done and I needed a new one).

Good things about this stick: I only have one more. The aroma while burning (between draws) smelled great.

In conclusion, I would give my other stick to my worst enemy if they wanted to smoke a cigar with me. That way I could smell the cigar, but not have the torture of actually smoking it. It pretty much reminded me of smoking a giant cigarette with no filter.

Thanks to all that warned me against this stick...I will not make the same mistake twice.

(BTW, if anyone likes these, these are my opinions, and I mean you no disrespect. If you want it, PM your address, and I will send you my remaining stick (Robusto) PRONTO, no charge!!!)Well, you snooze you looze. Good luck with this one Nick!!!

Edit1: Added Strength/flavor
Edit2: Nicklor wanted my extra for some reason ???

Haven't had a 5 Vegas yet and after reading this I guess I will skip the Classic!

Very odd. I've had good luck with 5 Vegas Classic (by contrast, I had a less than great first experience with 5 Vegas Gold, and 2nd experience, but the 3rd was transcendent, so perhaps they're having problems with rpoduction-line consistency?). But I tend to smoke quite slowly, too, which often pre-empts the bitterness. And I've only had the Fifty-five (5.5x55) vitola. Sorry that you didn't like it, CM.

That's cool, it was part of a sampler, and I haven't had that much variety.

Besides, what better way to find out what you don't like, eh?

You know it is okay to toss a cigar after a few puffs right?

I mean you just kept at it, going through the pain and agony.

Do you want a gold medal for making it to the last third?

I remember one smoke I had was foul and acidic. It took less than 5 minutes before I chucked it. It happens.
At least you know now what not to smoke.

A few years back I had these and I too bought them from a sampler.
I only had two and each one I thought were.........not bad.
I never bought them again because I am looking for something better.

With your review, I doubt I will try again for a while.

Yeah, I found the best was to draw really slowly. For some reason the bitter just wouldn't go away,,,,,maybe it's because I'm still a newb...
:sign:

The sign is supposed to go under the commas for those of you who are wondering :D

Yeah, yeah, call me an optimist. I guess I was hoping it would get better.

No, I don't need Gold...Silver or Bronze will be fine, as long as I place (I want a big check too - Happy Gilmore)

I was truly debating throwing it, but I also have the bad habit of staying to the bitter (no pun intended) end.

Did you ever see the movie "The Ice Storm" I did, (another "DON'T" I just kept telling myself I know it's 2am but this movie HAS to have a point...Long story short...it didn't. It's just the kind of person I am.

Oh well enough of my rambling.

This describes my experience with 5 Vegas products exactly. It is funny how some people get one preference, and others see it the exact opposite.

Anyway, sorry about the bad experience. And it has been said before, but it is ok to toss it if you really think it is a rocket. Especially when the stick is in the 2 to 3 dollar range.

I picked up a sampler last year from CI because price was right and I didn't know any better. Had been lurking here and thought everyone was nuts for spending 6-8 dollars on a single smoke. Little did I know that soon I wouldn't thank twice about dropping 15-30 dollars on something I really wanted to try.

I found the Classic to be a dog rocket as well, all five of mine just plain sucked. The Golds were smokable, but didn't do much for me, so a friend took most of those. I found the Series "A" to be an acceptable smoke for mowing or fooling around in the garage. My sampler also came with Limitda 2006's. I have found these to be quite enjoyable and at about 5 dollars per are just about right.

So I guess like anything in life you can go with quality or quanitity. I am not really for brand bashing, Acid's of course do not count, but Vegas are fairly cheap and the ones I have tried have been well constructed, but did nothing to "thrill me" as some of the reviews at CI would suggest.

I really enjoy the 5 Vegas classic Churchill. Smoked through a box of em.

For about 2 bucks I have enjoyed the classic robusto while I am working in the shop. It tends to sit in the tray a while between draws so perhaps that helps, but I haven't found them to be that bad.

Sorry your experience was so foul!

How long did you let it sit in a humidor before you smoked it?

I bought a 5er of the 5V Classis a while back to try. The first one was indeed a letdown. After I let them sit for just a couple months, the next two I've had were MUCH better (and the third was better than the second). So try letting them rest for a while and give it another shot would be my advice.

Nope not a classic fan...

The 'A' are great, and I like the Limitados.

I have only tried one, and that was a 5 Vegas A which was a damn good cigar. :D
