I enjoyed this cigar, one of my favorites, yesterday afternoon on a beautiful NorCal afternoon with the iPass Blues CD playing on the stereo. These cigars are from a box I received last year during la Revolucion.
The construction of this cigar was solid, a hefty and firm cigar with only a slight give under pressure. Not one of the prettiest cigars but with its rustic reddish colored wrapper and wonderful pre-light aroma you get an idea of what's in store for the smoker.
The foot of the cigar seemed to greet the flame like old friends. As it lit the burning wrapper took that familiar form of tucking under as the ash grew. The draw was smooth and easy with plenty of smoke to fill the air with that wonderful Anejo aroma. The initial flavors were what I call dark flavors of leather, mesquite, and black french roast coffee with a slight sweetness on the mid palate.
I was enjoying "Amazing Grace" and "St. James Infirmary" on the stereo along with those deep dark flavors when just about the same time that Stevie Ray Vaughans "Crossfire" started to play on the stereo when a brightness in the flavor began to develop, almost a citrus note. This occurs at about 1" into the cigar.
At about 1 1/2" into the cigar the citrus note leaves and we return to leather and mesquite flavors. "Me And The Devil Blues", "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" and "Love Me Like A Man" are playing when I start to notice how nice the wrapper feels in my fingers, velvety.
Middle of the cigar, 2 1/2" remaining, Etta James is playing and life is good!, but I'm beginning to notice that the draw is getting a little tighter. I give the cigar a little roll between my finger to loosen up the tobacco and that fixes everything. Lots of smoke, beautiful dark flavors of mesquite, coffee and leather with a new slight aroma of orange. "At Last", "Next Time You See Me", "Tell Me How Do You Feel", "Mr. Banker", "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" ..... damn, this is one awesome CD!
At the 2" remaining point and I get my first taste of nicotine or tar, I haven't quite yet figured out which one it is but it's the taste in the last part of a cigar that I don't like. I purge just a little to burn off the taste and then am rewarded with those other wonderful flavors. "Statesboro Blues" and "Little Red Rooster" play when I then get a grassy component showing in the taste ... It just so happens that one of the lines in "Spoonful" that sticks in my head is "turn your lamp down low".
1 1/2" remaining and the end is near, I don't wnat this to end. The flavors are quite complex at this point with less and less separation of tastes. More purging required but I'm still enjoying this cigar. "Cherry Red Wine" and "Mannish Boy" are on and I know the end is approaching quickly.
B.B. King - "I'll Survive" is the song I knew I'd finish this cigar on, one of my sledgehammer songs. Flavors are strong and it's time for me to end it here while I still have a good taste in my mouth.
