OK, so it's no Atuck "rolled in 1846 by the third incarnation of the Cuban tobacco messiah on the thighs of the hottest cuban virgins" super stick, but hey, I'm still a bit of a newb, I guess.
Last night, a good buddy stopped by to celebrate me leaving this job. He is a good friend, and in a position to eventually get me inside at a firm that I would LOVE to go to. So, we were celebrating AND discussing my prospects. I asked him what he liked to smoke, as I introduced him to decent cigars about 3 years ago, and wanted to see where his tastes had gone. JimD knows him as my friend Rob, who I used to smoke with. It had been a long time since we had sat down for a good smoke with a drink, so I planned on smoking a good one.
Rob saw the overflow humi on top of the Aristocrat, and said "Holy Crap...is THAT your new humidor?" Blown away by the cabinet...I said "No, that's overflow...the big cabinet is below it." His jaw just about hit the ground. It's funny, when you meet someone who is not a real cigar-freak, my little collection suddenly looks pretty big. It's just an Aristocrat Plus/THC.
ROb requested a Cohiba, so I pulled out what I have...a few Sig 6's, a few Sig 4s, a box of SIg 4's that STILL are too young (Dammit Gary....when are these things going to be ready!), a couble boxes of Sig 1s, a few hidden in the back that don't come out for anyone (including me!)....and then I remembered them. the 04 Sublimes. Took a sniff....figured these are ready to meet their match (pun intended).
So, we grab our smokes, and head outside. I pour a nice glass of water for each of us.....to go with the Ron Z Centanario (the 15, not the 23, unfortunately).
WOW. What an absoltuley wonderful cigar. What an absolutely wonderful rum. What an INSANLEY good pairing.
The vanilla an sweet caramel mouth-coating of the rum did blissfully delicious things to the smoke. I was nervous, wonding if these would be "on" yet. More time might make them even better, but these cigars gave great big bursts of chocolate, and roasty tobacco in a perfect-drawing, perfect burning package. I know there are those who will call smoking these now premature...even wasteful, but I can not agree. While they may (will) continue to improve with further age, these smoked fantastically. THe flavors grew in both intensity AND complexity throughout the 1.75 hours that we smoked them, never exhibiting sloppy, young, or in-your-face immaturity.
We each had two glasses of rum, and smoked until it was dark and cold.
Good drinks, great smokes, and a vlose old frield (I hadn't seen Rob except for one brief smoke at Jims shop, in over a year). It was one fo those nights that reminds me what cigar smoking should be like.
