So here it is...2000 posts. Thought I'd do another little contest to memorialize the "event." So here are the specifics:
1. Contest is another music-based one...name that tune(s)/artist(s);
2. Contest open to those who have been here a minimum of 1 year;
3. First person to correctly identify/answer (both artist and song name) is the winner;
4. Prize will be a fiver of my choosing, no dog rockets;
5. A head's up now, I am heading out of town tomorrow for the Memorial Day weekend, so will try to have it out before I leave, but if time is pressing, may not get it out until next week;
6. Have fun.
Some of these have a common element. This is largely a product of my finding a box full of memorabilia surrounding these artists, backstage passes, numerous concert ticket stubs, signed lps, also inclusive of items garnered as a result of my membership in their (i.e., one of these artists quoted) "Secret Society." Ah...SoCal in the 80's and very early 90's...So, since finding this box, I've been playing this stuff non-stop....God, it's absolute perfection...
So, without further ado...
One
I don't know why I feel this way
I don't know if it's right or wrong to laugh at misfortune
Darkness can never last too long
Every time I think I'm falling
And there's nobody around to hold me up
And it seems like the world has come to an end
I look for miles but not a face is friendly
But then suddenly a hole opens up in the ground
The bottom of the hole is a raging fire
I try to jump over but there's no way
The next thing I know, I'm going down...
Two
Life's been so good to me
Has it been good to you
Has it been everything
That you expected it to be
Was it as good for you
As it was good for me
And was it everything
That it was all set up to be...
Three
When everybody is running in the big race
And having a good time
Who am I to cast a shadow
Who am i?
I looked death in the face last night
I saw him in a mirror
And he simply smiled
He told me not to worry
He told me just to take my time...
Four
Ever lay there half asleep all hours of the night
With some nagging demon tugging on that
Tiny bell inside your mind
When suddenly that strange idea
Bursts into an inspiration
You grab for it and then
The whole thing slips right though your fingers...
Five
Let's have a party there's a full moon in the sky
It's the hour of the wolf and I don't want to die
I'm so happy dancing while the Grim Reaper
Cuts, cuts, cuts, but he can't get me
I'm as clever as can be
And I'm very quick, but don't forget
We've only got so many tricks...
Six
With sand in my heart and clouds in my head
I thought about us both and the life we've led
From pages in a book and pictures on a screen
We make ourselves like clay from someone else's dream
One second you are cast just like stones at my feet
But I am not a king, please don't worship me
With everyone around telling us what to do
With deafening sound, whisper I love you...
Seven
Everyone says
Sooner or later you'll reach the end
Of the line
When things get rough
Some think it's easy to jump the ship
You decide
I say don't throw it away
There's about a million reasons why
Though you've heard them all before
And you're getting very tired
Lay your head on my lap and I'll sing you this lullaby...
Eight
There's a path for you and I to follow
For our goals aren't always in our sight
But now you've come to dread and fear tomorrow
Were your dreams killed in your sleep last night?
Nine
he trips her as
her sandals fail
she says stop!
i'm a girl...
whose fingernails are made
of mother's pearl...
yellow buttercup
helicopters
orange buttercat
chasing after
the crazy bee
mad about somebody...
**Shifting gears now and, wink-wink, nudge-nudge, continents...**
Ten
I loved the world when we were poor,
when winter banged on summer’s door
and pain was april rain upon my skin.
I sheltered as each friend was tamed
and shackled by the wedding game,
now life has left this stain upon my skin...
Eleven
always at the foot of the photograph - that's me there
snug as a thug in a mugshot pose, a foul-mouthed rogue
owner of this corner and not much more
still these days i'm better placed to get my just rewards
i'll pound out a tune and very soon
i'll have too much to say and a dead stupid name...
Twelve
i'd need to take leave of my senses to get a moment's rest
following in footsteps
footsure in fancy dress
head in my hands i'm making plans
hoovering up for the day...
Thirteen
Chimes sing Sunday morn.
Today's the day She's sworn.
To steal what She never could own.
And race from this hole She calls home.
Now you're at the wheel.
Tell me how how does it feel?
So good to have equalized,
To lift up the lids of your eyes...
Fourteen
Husband don't know what he's done
Kids don't know what's wrong with mum
She can't say, they can't see, putting it down to another bad day...
Fifteen
I once had a friend who I loved from my heart
But I went on and left her 'fore I'd made a start
Now I'm moaning the blues like the rest of the charts
Take me back...
So I'll cry with a limp
Just get by on a limb
Till these blue eyes of mine they are closed
So here's to an old fashioned peck on the cheek
And farewell my sweet northern rose...
Those bloody great ballads we hated at first
Well I bought them all, now I'm writing worse
Save us from baldness and saving the earth
Take me back...
And I'll smile with a limp
And I'll love with a limp
Till the clouds disappear from above
And as the storm moves away all I can say
Is there's a towel on the door for your love...
Sixteen
Dreams of sights, of sleigh rides in seasons
where feelings not reasons, can make you decide
as leaves pour down, splash autumn on gardens
as colder nights harden, their moonlit delights
and i love you...
Seventeen
Well they said if I wrote the perfect love song
You would take me back
Well I wrote it but I lost it
And now will you take me back anyway?
Eighteen
Gasping - but somehow still alive
this is the fierce last stand of all I am
Gasping - dying - but somehow still alive
this is the final stand of all I am...
Nineteen
I want it now I want it now not
the promises of what tomorrow brings
I need to live in dreams today
I'm tired of the song that sorrow sings
I want more than I can get just
trying to trying to trying to forget
I walk to you through winds of fire
and never let you know the way I feel
Under skin is where I hide love
that always gets me on my knees
I want more than I can get just
trying to trying to trying to forget...
And, for the last one, a song I will quote in its entirety, taking a momentary step away from my curmudgeon self, simply because it is a beautiful song about growing up and old together, with a typical humor often demonstrated by this band...
Twenty
Line one is the time
That you, you first stayed over at mine
And we drank our first bottle of wine
And we cried...
Line two we're away
And we both, we both had nowhere to stay
Well the bus-shelter's always ok
When you're young.
Now you're older and I look at your face
Every wrinkle is so easy to place
And I only write them down just in case
That you die...
Let's take a look at these crows feet, just look
Sitting on the prettiest eyes
Sixty 25th of Decembers
Fifty-nine 4th of Julys
Not through the age or the failure, children
Not through the hate or despise
Take a good look at these crows feet
Sitting on the prettiest eyes.
Line three I forget,
But I think, I think it was our first ever bet
And the horse we backed was short of a leg
Never mind...
Line four in a park -
And the things, the things that people do in the dark
I could hear the faintest beat of your heart
Then we did...
Now you're older and I look at your face
Every wrinkle is so easy to place
And I only write them down just in case
You should die...
Lets take a look at these crows feet, just look
Sitting on the prettiest eyes,
Sixty 25th of Decembers
Fifty-nine 4th of Julys
You can't have too many good times, children
You can't have too many lines
Take a good look at these crows feet
Sitting on the prettiest eyes
Well my eyes look like a map of the town
And my teeth are either yellow or they're brown
But you'll never hear the crack of a frown
When you are here
You'll never hear the crack
Of a frown.
Enjoy and have fun brothers/sisters....
