Ok I am going to try something a little different for this contest. The rules are simple. Find what you believe to be the greatest/most powerful photograph(s) from the last 100 years and a brief explanation of why. This can be a scene from a significant world event, nature, sports, or whatever you feel like. The winner will be selected by myself and two other judges. Our ruling will be final. Only one picture per post please. This contest will run until next Sunday (2/25) at 9:09 PM PAC.

Winner gets a nice fiver...

Good luck!

The kiss that signified the end to America's involvement in the greatest war in human history.

This is one of the most recognized pictures in the world and everyone thinks U.S. Marines when they see it.

This photo shows The Third World giant problem, its indigence, famine and disaster

While it cannot hold a candle to the others in this thread, this image marked the end to CP's so called innocence...

Boy, he wasn't kidding! I call it the coffinplex 4000. A crowning achievement in the evolution of dying. Spend your eternal years watching satellite TV, playing MP3's and having your visitors take a peek on the "Coffin Cam".

When I saw this picture in 1963 I couldn't believe anybody could actually do this to them self. It opened my eyes to what belief, conviction and discipline could do.

A Buddhist monk, Thich Quang Duc Siagon 1963.

This one made my father first believe we could not win "the hearts and minds".

It's not a winner, but it means a lot to me.

Doc.

I know you said a picture so, hopefully two does not disqualify me. Plus, will not be able to be too brief. These two flag raisings both are one and the same to me and, they have the same meaning. Every time I look at them I get the same reaction.
I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing at that exact moment of 9-11 as if it was today. I remember thinking about my firefighter friend Steve Who works for Arlington FD and responded to this attack on the United States. My wife who worked with me coming downstairs almost hysterical because she could not get ahold of her ex husband on his cell phone. He was employed by a contractor working at the Pentagon on that day. He is the father to her now eleven year old daughter.
I watched the TV and listened to the radio for days trying to find any information I could about survivors or, what had happened. Was there any news as to the whereabouts of the hundreds of Police, Firefighters, And EMS who risked their lives in these three buildings. Who could have done such a cowardly act?

But then, they also mean something else to me. They symbolize the strength and unity of this great Country during this whole ordeal. Everyone came together in the following days, weeks, and months. People were a little nicer, petty differences seemed like something that we had neither the room or time for. Everywhere you looked there was the American flag on cars, doorsteps, and these pictures. They told us and the Terrorist responsible that, do whatever you want, you can't touch our spirit or take away our pride. We will survive and come out on top.
Cool contest. How original.

Edited for spelling

The A Bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima basicly ended WWII and started the arms race with the Soviet Union that lasted 40 plus years. But having the "Bomb" probably has decreased the chances of having another world war.

But now days, whereas governmants with the "Bomb" know that there can be no winner in a nuclear war, a fanatic like Bin Laden may not care. So pray he doesn't get his hands one.

This one of Ali always makes you think how he was the greatest there ever was. Hard to look at this and see him the way he is now with Parkinsons.

That's a winner to me, Swifty. Man law prevents me from commenting further.

Congrats on 1000 posts insight. This is a great concept you have come up with.
I always have liked this photo of Jesse Owens causing fits for Hitler at the 1936 Olympics.
