I stumbled across this in my search for holiday gifts this year, and thought I'd pass it along:

The Chumby

I've not used one yet, but I've read numerous reviews of it. It's essentially an Internet-enabled soft cased appliance.

It's an alarm clock. It's a local weather feed. It streams internet music. It can display your photos. It can give you stock quotes. You can view your eBay auctions on it. You can watch videos/webcams on it.

Basically, it does whatever you want, because you add whatever Chumby widgets you want to it, and it'll display them.

I'll let you know how the sister in law likes it... looks pretty cool though.

It has to stay connected to the computer or will it work wirelessly at any place there is wifi?

Looks like a neat gadget but couldn't find the dimensions.

Didn't find the deminsions for the whole unit but the screen is 3.5" LCD touch screen.

technical specifications for the chumby

 •
3.5" LCD color touchscreen
Two external USB 2.0 full-speed ports
350 MHz ARM processor
64 MB SDRAM
64 MB NAND flash ROM
Stereo 2W speakers
Headphone output
Squeeze sensor
Accelerometer (motion sensor)
Leather casing
AC adapter included
Wi-fi connectivity
Access to the free Chumby Network
 • Over-the-air software updates
Seems like it incorporates the web and different functions similar to the iphone. I recently got one for christmas (early) and can't put the damn thing down.

That thing looks pretty cool. let us know how it works Moki.

it has built in Wifi.
Monthly service?

This is quoted from their site:

No subscriptions to pay, no plans to sign up for. It's paid for by Chumby Industries and by sponsor companies who will be sending you widgets such as music, games, movie previews, customized alarm clocks, and special offers for products. Chumby Industries is 100% dedicated to keeping your widget channels new, intriguing, fun and FREE.

Not a bad idea for someone who doesn't have a PDA but I can't see using it if you do. At first I thought it might be a good idea for the office but why would you use it if you are sitting at a computer?

I thought it would be cool to see the rss feed of Cp pop up on the screen but it doesn't work. The other rss feeds work but not CP. Frustrating. Customer service told me the Chumby doesn't like all rss feeds.
