My days usually end with a cigar and a book on the back porch.

I just finished, Lone Survivor : The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10.
Lt. Michael Murphy is going to be awarded the Medal of Honor on October 22. Real insightful book about some truly amazing guys.

On Deck:
Afghanistan Campaign
Tides of War
Virtues of War

PM if anybody wants to read the Lone Survivor, I've been trying to convince all my friends to read it. You won't have a dry eye by the end and be thankful for complete strangers.

The Innocent Man by John Grisham....outstanding so far

Its amazing the amount of injustice has been done to actual innocent people that just get railroaded by the system...

Finished "Marine Sniper" the biography of Gunnery Sgt. Carlos Hatchock. He is the sniper with the highest "confirmed" kills in sniper history.

I am just starting "One Shot One Kill" which is about several snipers and their story of how they have helped and improved the sniper's respect and the training program.

Just bought this 2 days ago,

but haven't been able to crack it open, class-related reading getting in the way.
Good thing tomorrows Friday though...

In American history. There are some Russian's that would disagree with you.

On the topic of Marine Sniper books, i just got Shooter from my Dad. Its about GSGT Jack Coughlin's tour in the recent Iraq campaign. Very good. What was suprising about this book is on page 219/220 I saw the name of GSGT Courville. I had a GSGT Courvile as my Platoon Leaders Course Platoon SGT- India Company, 2nd Platoon. The book descibes him just like i remeber him, and even says he had just finished a stint as a DI. Pretty freaking cool. Attack that bridge like there is a piece of steak at the end of it!

True. It think the Russian sniper was a woman too.

Ditto. "Lone Survivor" is an amazing work. Just finished it myself.

Now reading "The Landmark Thucydides - A Comprehensive Guide to the Peloponnesian War" by, of course, Thucydides.

Also have lined up "The Past as Prologue - The Importance of History to the Military Profession" by Williamson Murray, given to me by one of my fellow USMC Officers. An outstanding piece that I am eagerly looking forward to completing.

Currently reading Go Tell It On The Mountain by James Baldwin. So far, real good; but then again it is a classic.

Am I the only guy reading a subject besides War?

I read "Hop on Pop" by Dr. Seuss at exactly 8 pm EVERY night! The plot is excellent and the depth of the characters is truly breathtaking! I give it a two thumbs up and would recommend it to anyone looking for a serious read. :sign: :sign:

Actually, just finishing James Clavell's third installment of his Asia Saga, Gai-Jin.

edited for spelling

Hilarious, I've been reading that one as well (and right around 8 pm to boot). "Foot Book" has also been in the mix lately. There are a lot of good books for kids, but three times as many are horseshit. On occasion I'll get a couple pages in and just toss it, to which my boy responds, "Daddy, is that book sucks." Yes son, that book is sucks.

"Almost A Miracle" by John Ferling. A history of the American Revolutionary War.

Next up are "The Summer of 1787" by Stewart and then "Blood and Thunder" by Hampton Sides.

Truck: A Love Story (P.S.) by Michael Perry

Light, pleasant read abuot restoring and International Harvest truck in the context of life. Should finish soon.

Next up, Dispatched from Bedlam Farm by John Katz.

I'm reading "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down; A Hmong child, her American doctors, and the collision of two cultures". Reading it for a Multicultural class that I'm taking. It's been an eye opener up to this point.

I really enjoyed that as well. We have a large Hmong community here in the Twin Cities, which is what lead me to read it. I ended up wanting to read more about how the CIA used the Hmong in Vietnam. Crazy how much shit goes on that we don't know about.

:D

"Sonny's Blues" is a short story classic. If you like James Baldwin, then you might look at his essay collection, Notes of a Native Son.

I've been reading essays lately.

Camus-The Myth of Sisyphus: And Other Essays is very simple to read on the surface. Probably the most beautiful essay collection I've read.

DH Lawrence-Studies in Classic American Literature has the best essay on Moby Dick that I've ever read.
