The Balvenie 15 yo Single Barrel Malt Scotch Whiskey, 95.6 proof, standard Balvenie bottle, tube packaging with info booklet. About $50-55.
The Balvenie Single Barrel is a difficult scotch to give an accurate review on since it changes, however slightly, with each barrel. The bottle in the pic came from cask 2339 and was finished some time ago. My favorite Balvenie, I most likely drink more of the 15 yo then all the other Balvenies put together so this review will be a combination of what is actually in my glass and my experience with this dram.
I have the feeling that the good weekends to sit out on the deck are going to be in short supply so I took advantage tonight with a good 3 fingers in my glass and a DCM #4 for after the review.
The nose is full of malt, honey and a fair amount of alcohol which doesn't really show up in the tasting. Tasting is much softer and smoother then the nosing or proof would suggest. Sweet honeyish tones combine with a slight almond taste and spices over the top of it all. The finish is really long the the almond coming to the fore for most of it. Honeyed tones on the sides of the tongue are the final ending to this dram.
While the flavors are good and well balanced this scotch is just the slightest amount not complex enough to be a real ACE. Like an A- instead of a true A it is close but not quite there. Howver, it is one of the best Speyside malts you can buy at it's price point and I highly recommend it.
Here is the review Ralph did earlier this year.
