I am new here. Very new, I mean like less than 4 months new (ain't it the truth AVB :D ). I ask, and will continue to ask many questions. I can tell you though, that before I post a question I search, then search again, then one more time. I use as many different key words as I can. This board has 2 count them 2 really good search tools. I use both, I prefer the old school search, I like using the "more search options" from the old search tool. 90% of the time the answers are there, some times it takes me and hour to get the search string right, some times I have to modify the search string from the findingings that I get, but I stay at.

The FOG's and established members of this board have no problems helping out, and if you search and can only find a partial answer, post what you find when you ask the question, and then seek their knowledge on the finer points that may have not been found. That little extra effort pays off in gold here.

No one is saying you can't ask a question, or you can't start new threads, I will never get tired of reading a "My new Humi" thread, as long as it is about the joy of buying, setting up, and filling a new humi.....not the "it's here, now what do I do?" That has been covered.

I will be the first to admit that I have broken my own statements that I have made here, but I really try to go beyond the call of duty before I ask a question.

Heck, I will even search other cigar boards for the information, but I always come back here to double check it....I just trust the guys/gals here more.

OK, off my soap box.

Tim

edit for grammer

This is one of the better posts I have had the pleasure of reading on CP in a while (besides Phil's "Read More/Post Less" thread, Wilkeys CSI threads, the countless informative reviews, and helpful humidity threads posted, get viper beads or a puck its worth the investment). Being a newbie myself I have found that a little search goes along way, and if you still cant find an answer in the forums most of the "FOG's" are willing to help via. PM. Running a website of this magnitude takes time and money and wasted bandwidth is something that IMO should be avoided at all costs. Thanks to Rod for making this site available to all of us and to everyone else that contributes to the informative and well thought out discussions that we are allowed to have on this site.

Nice post Tim. I agree with you..sometimes all of us newbs post a thread that might not be necessary to post..but at least TRY to use the search tool and know that if you have a question, it's probably been asked before, so search for it!

This is also coming from a newb..so take it for what its worth

Nearly every cigar board has at least one strength that makes them worth perusing. What sets a board apart from all others for us as individuals is usually the people on that board. It is the comaraderie we usually enjoy and seek out so often. Quite often, we pick a board as "home" for us simply because it is where we started out and forged our first cigar friendships. This is not my "home" board, but I think there are many fine people participating on this board.

So go ahead and check out them other boards. Participate on them even, time permitting. There's nothing wrong with learning from different sources. It's not "cheating" on your home board. A lil' cross board exposure is a good thing. You'll run across many of the same names, and bump into even more who know who you know. This community is very large and it is very small.

Heck I used Google last night to find info on a cigar and what was the very first thing it brought me?

A thread here at CP.

Well said, Tim. Really well said and coming from a newer member, I think it might resonate better with other new guys.

On the money, Tim.

Using search and not spamming the forums with questions that have been answered time and time again shows good form, and good manners.

Demonstrates a bit of self reliance and shows enough interest in the topic to do some independent research.

Kudos - B.B.S.

LOL happens to me a lot, not a fan of board search functions (but CP's IS much better)

So i google first... the first 3 links on the most obcure things i look for... are of course CP

Thanks for the thread there Tim... I too had a few mistakes when I was starting out here... Good job... Nice read...

I couldn't agree more. I'm new as well. My post count is small, and it will stay that way until I've read and smoked enough to really have something to contribute. This is a great place, and newbs are important to keep things going, but would it really kill anyone to do a search before they post? I probably spend an hour searching before I start a thread, and sometimes after a search I can resolve my issue with a simple PM.

Being new myself I am starting to get the hang of the search function. Slowly but surely, and there is a big difference between the google and non-google search. So it really is a good idea to use both if you can't find what you are looking for in one of them. I never really thought about the PM thing, but that is probably a good idea as well. Then you could ask the 'FOG' if they think you should post about it for other members to see as well.

This is the only cigar forum I am a member of, not because I found it first, but because reading through the information on here, this seemed to be a much more professional and well organized space. As well as a lot more closely knit group and I was nervous as heck at first posting anything because I didn't want to intrude, but everyone has been very helpful.

I hate to bump my own thread BUT

Fellow Noobs, are we putting thought into the questions we are asking? Are we putting any effort to find the answers on our own?

Cigars is a wonderful fulfilling life style and hobby. But only if you YOU put something into it. Any one can ask a bunch of questions and more likely than not, you will get well thought out answers from the S/BOTL here.

But at this time I submit to you; it is much more rewarding to figure it out on your own. Hard work pays off, without sacrifice there is no reward. If you do not have the time or patience to do several searches for the information that you seek, then you most likely do not have the time or temperament to enjoy this hobby for any length of time.

Please if your post is going to start with "this my sound like a stupid question" or " noob question" or "this may have been asked before" do your self a favor and search it. IF you do not know how to search, and there is an art to it, then please PM me, I don't know a lot about this hobby yet, but I am getting pretty good at looking up information.

again, stepping down off my soap box.

Tim

Great post. I thought I would throw out another useful way to search this and any other site. You can constrain Google search to a site, search terms in the title, url, and a slew of other tricks. For example, searching on "tatuaje intitle:review site:cigarpass.com" will search for the word 'tatuaje' where the word 'review' appears in the title of the post and constrain the search to the 'cigarpass.com' domain.

Googling for Google power search will provide more insight.

Bump for all the new guys
