Four Humidors I Built

Just thought I'd share this. Within the past year I built four humidors, two for me and the other two for my best friends. The first was my small cabinet that holds about....200 comfortably and another 75 if I pack the heck out of it. Problem was I made it more as a display humidor, of course I'd never need more space than that! (The base is in the works now, it'll be a full fledged armoir when done)

The carcass is Honduran Mahogany with Birdseye Maple panels, I think it's a pretty neat contrasting look. The shelves are solid Spanish Cedar and hang on brackets that my wife actually designed for me. The logo burnt in the front of the shelves is something I put on all my work, usually in a hidden spot, but for this I wanted it up front.

Pics can be found here:

The next three were desktops, one for my office and the others again, for my buddies. These are made from 5/8" thick Spanish Cedar with a 1/8" hardwood veneer. All three are different species of veneer.

Black Walnut = Joe - Marshalltown, IA
Birdseye Maple = Vince - DesMoines, IA
Lacewood = Mine

All three humidors

Two closed and one open. You can see the top is a collage of cigar bands.

Mine is made out of Lacewood. Each humidor has 2 coats of boiled linseed oil and 24 hand rubbed coats of oil & urathane topcoat on it. These things shine like...well I don't know what they shine like, but they shine!

Joe's is made from Black Walnut. Each one has a similiar top of cigar bands. The bands were glued in place with Modge Podge glue and then sealed with a two part epoxy self leveling top coat, the same thing that's used on some bar tops.

Vince's is Birdseye Maple and I think the best looking of them all. The top and base match much better than in the pic, not sure why it photographed so funny!?

A close up of one of the tops, this is mine. These bands were an absolute biatch to glue down and get looking like an overlapped woven type pattern. I have to thank the wife for all the help on this one!

Beautiful work - well done!

All your humidors look very nice. I really like the look of the display humi. When you went to lay down bands did you go in with layout in mind or just sort of where things appeared to fit?

ROFLMAO, building them was easy, laying down those bands was not! Linda and I both worked frantically to place bands in a design that we thought looked good, working from the center of a board out, trying to lift up bands that the glue was setting, in order to get another under it in a woven fashion. It was not fun at all, and we had to do it three times. Trying to make sure we used a good variety of bands in each one, some horizontal, some vertical, not too many of each next to each other with colors in mind....damn, it was not fun at all! :0

Beautiful work! How much would you charge for one of those desktop humidors? :) :) :) :)

You did a beautiful job on all of those. Looking forward to seeing the base photos next.

Very nice! Thanks for sharing the pics. I bet folks are trying to figure out something to do with their band collections now.

symyn, not really sure, never gave it a thought. I can tell you this, it would be cheaper to buy one at a B&M simply because anything that's a one of a kind, takes more time than just hammering out like parts and assembling. That being said, it's not that I wouldnt do it, but probably not for $, I'd rather trade for cigars! :whistling:

Thanks folks, I had a blast making them. And am seriously considering a whole new armoir instead of just a base for my current one. You can just never have enough space!

I was about to say beautiful, but not near big enough!

No doubt about it!

Beautiful craftmanship. Thanks for sharing. :)

Great Job! very nicely done. btw, where did you purchase the spanish cedar? i was thinking about making one myself but i wasn't sure if Home Depot/Lowes would carry that type of wood.

As for laying down the bands, i made a cover for one of my desktop humi's with a bunch of bands i had and what i did was cut a piece of thick paper to the size on top of the humidor, get some clear thin carpet tape (2-sided and strong), lay it out on the paper and start placing the bands out. You might need to map the bands before hand but its alot easier than glue.

I've got nobody locally that carries Spanish Cedar so I have to mail order it. Plan ahead, order 25% more than what you think and you'll be fine, the quality of the wood is good, e-bay has auctions all the time too.

As far as the bands, that's a good idea, I'm gonna have to do a test piece to see how it works, I've got plenty of carpet tape being a woodworker. But I'd think it may be difficult to peel one up to lay another under, unless you place them gently and then j-roll them when done. Cool idea.

Beautiful. You'll make me a cabinet humidor and fill it with $3-10 sticks, and connies. (let me know if the jedi mind trick works!) Seriously if you have any plans in writing I'd love to get em. My bro is a fairly accomplished woodworker, and i'd love to exploit his talents for my own enjoyment. Problem is he's an attorney so could you also send a cattle prod with the plans to keep his eyes on my prize!?
