Most Expensive Cigars?

Just curious, how much? I was watching Seinfeld and Kramer had a cigar rolled for Castro :) Just curious if really "elite" cigars like that real.

Are Cubans really the best? And is it only because they are illegal in the States?

I have been reading about cigars for 4 hours straight now, I must obtain information :)

A cigar, like anything else, is worth what someone else will pay for it. A box of "mint" Dunhill Cabinettas could bring $10,000+, to the right person. I'm sure there are more expensive ones than that even. It's all in what you are willing to pay for it. I've spent a couple hundred on a single cigar several times and would do it again and probably will. So, it's hard to peg down the most expensive as something will always top it.

Are Havanas (Cubans) really best?? Well, again a matter of opinion. To me, yes. Is it because they are "illegal"? No, it is because my tastes are best suited to the distinct flavor a Havana imparts.

Only four hours... get busy, youngster.... :p

yep, they do indeed exist -- as Matt mentioned, Cuban Dunhill Cabinettas and Estupendos fetch extremely high prices, in no small part due to the fact that they haven't been made in a very long time.

There are cigars that are more rare, but they are not as sought after, so the prices are not as out of sight.

No, they aren't the best -- any more than steak is the best food. Depends on what you like; in addition "Cuban cigars" is not a very useful moniker: even the most diehard Habanos smoker doesn't like every line of Cuban cigar. There is also a wide range of tastes available in the various brands of Cuban cigars.

There's not much in common between a Cohiba, a Guantanamera, and a San Cristobal...

"Cuban cigars" is extremely general, analogous to "French wines" -- there are good and lousy incarnations of both, and a wide range of tastes of both. All the "Cuban" designation really tells you is what country the cigars are from (assuming they aren't fakes ;) ).

They have the Partagas 150 in my local shop for 55 a stick if i remember correctly. Whew!

"Best" is a relative term. Still I would say the majority of the members on this board would classify Havanas in general as being the best. For many of us nothing satisfies like a fine Cuban cigar. Then there are those like Moki lucky enough to have a much more broad taste. I prefer Cohiba myself

Alot of good advise here.

One thing I have noticed is that the longer I've been a member here, the more expensive my tastes become. My idea of an expensive smoke (and my willingness to pay for one) has gone from about $5 each to about $18 (for a PAM 26).

I must say that my enjoyment has grown right along with my cigar budget. One thing that helps my budget is that I don't smoke more than one cigar a day.

Everybody has their idea of expensive, you just have to find what you like. Do a newbie trade and you will get a nice variety of smokes.

Welcome to CP

Id probably have to say the Flor de Gurabos are the most expensive, sought after cigars.

There is a 150th series from Cuba. The link above shows them.

Superb cigars!

Heads and tails above the 155's which are somewhat divine in their own right. :)

During our last Herf at the Corona Cigar store, I was looking at the cigars in the 'special' humidor. Supposedly, they are pre-embargo Cubans bought from the estate of Ernie Kovacks. I noticed one of the boxes had a price tag of over $9,000. I asked one of the sales guys...he said they had cigars in there from $75 to $375 apiece. I asked if anybody ever buys a $375 cigar. He said he recently had a customer walk in and say "I want the best cigar in the place." He bought one of the $375 cigars, had the sales guy clip it and smoked it right there. When he was done, he came over and told that the sales guy, "That was a good one, pick me out another good cigar"....the sales guy told him, "Dude, you just smoked the best cigar in the store."....the guy ended up buying some $5 stick which he started smoking and then complained that it wasn't as good as the first one. Some people....

Cheers,
Joe

High $$$$ does not = quality in all cases.

Can't agree more. During the cigar boom (yes, those hated years), we used to have people walking into the local shop in San Antonio loudly stating that they wanted to buy the best cigar in the store. What they wanted of course, was to buy the most expensive and show off to the cute young thing standing next to them. Buying a really lousy, really expensive cigar during those years was easy. Little harder now, but can be done.

Matt R said it true.

As to the discussion of quality, there can really be no argument about quality of construction. A cigar either burns well, draws well, etc. or it doesn't. However, a cigar can have the best construction in the world and still taste like crap. However, I've had some really poorly constructed cigars that I nursed along just because they tasted so darn good.

The best cigar...the one(s) you like. :) The most expensive...that is another story. ;)
