Another temp. question if I may?

Howdy,

Living in SW Florida heat is obviously a problem.

I have two coolers set up now and the vertical one for storing boxes is giving me some trouble. I can put two of those blue fake ice blocks wrapped in a towel on top of the horizontal cooler (outside) and it keeps the temps down around 66-68 degrees all day, so no real problem there.

The other one as I said is vertical because of space constraints, so I can't really rest a block on top very well. My question is, can I but a block in the bottom of the cooler separated from the boxes by a shelf and get away with it? In one other thread someone said my humidity would zoom up but I'm not sure if the original poster was talking about the re-freeze blocks or real ice.

I have A/C on all day and have found the coolest closet. I have even shut down some vents as far as I dare to push more air towards that closet but it stays about 70 on the floor no matter what I do so I have to use additional means of some sort.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hiya, T.T.

Welcome aboard! How's the weather this morning where you are? :D

I don't have any experience with those colidors, so sorry I can't help you with your question.

B.T.T....

I am having a hard time here in Miami also. But for me, the worst part about it is tha heat keeps the humidity up. I am having to dry out the beads every other week. This sucks. The only thing I can think of is a window a/c unit.

Weather?

What Weather?

Big sigh of relief as Dennis goes by, being 15 miles from landfall last year nobody here really needs anything more.

That d**n thing jumped up in strength so fast today to a cat. 3 and now they say a cat. 4 when it hits, geez. Although I'm sure if anyone is from the Pensacola area on the forums here(they have much better/more important things to do at the moment) our thoughts go out to you.

Any way, emodx I seem to have the humidity under control luckily. No real place to put a window a/c unit in a small space, I did however look at those portable units. If they work I may try one as long as I can return it if it doesn't work out. The other thing is one of those wine coolers but $200 - $250 just seems a bit much for the purpose at the present time and I have no real good place for that either.

Anyone comment on the ice block and/or its effect on the humidity?

When was the last time the coils were cleaned? Any chance maybe the refrigerent need to be recharged? The only other thing I can think of is checking all the the seals around the house.

emodx,

Not sure I follow you here?

A/C unit is fine, just don't want to pay to keep it at the sort of temps that would then keep the coolador at a low enough temp. Way too much $.

The ice block reference was in regards to those blue re-freeze blocks you throw in coolers instead of ice.

I am in similar situation. I live in San Diego.

I tried placing my humidor inside of cooler and use reusable Ice Blocks on the sides.

I found out that it keeps the temp inside of the humidor around 71 and the inside of the cooler reading was around 69. I found out that the condensation got on the side of the humidor and the humidor where the ice blocks were. Ice blocks did touch the humidor. However, there was still mist on the humidor.
For this did not work out. I do not want to ruin my humi. My norm temp of this tiome of year is 72 to 76. $350 Electricity bills are not cool. I feel your pain. However, I have so much more in my gars.

I also tried a block inside the humi. Humidity went high and there was water drops no matter what I did.

I thought this hobby was about relaxing. With the fear of the eggs I am going crazy

I think the only solution is to freeze, I am looking into one of those vacuum seal baggie things. I want to make sure I get all the air out before freezing.

If any one has any other ideas please speak up.

Regards,

GKR

Tempus,

Let me see if I read you correctly.

You say the closet your humidor is in stays at 70 degrees? Dont sweat it! No pun inteded...

I wish I could be so lucky to find a closet at 70 degrees. Most websites state 70/70 for the perfect conditions. So if you have no problem with humidity and who would in Central Florida!!! and your temp is steady at 70 degrees then your golden. Otherwise try a oscelating fan in the closet to help move the air around, you may get a few degrees help with the fan. Try one from wal-mart for $27.64

Good luck and Welcome from Central Florida (Saint Cloud)

Good question. Inside wood would probably be ok since it is made to be kept at high humidity (70%) and low temps (70 at most). As far as the outside I would think since being lacquered those parts would be good but the unfinished parts, hardware, and felt may not be ok? Im not sure how they would do inside it. on the website it mentions high temp at 57. I am curious to think you would need a plug regulator to help keep the temp a little higher. Im not sure if thats the right wording but what I mean is one of those controls that interface between the outlet and the fridge with a temp sensor that would go inside the fridge. WHen it gets to cold it shuts it off, when it gets to hot it turns the fridge on. Curious to know how it would work, I have seen other sites convert the wine coolers before.

iv read on other sources that you can put computer fans into your coolodor to cool things up. connect it to a power supply which is already connected to a vacation lamp timer. it will circulate the air and cool things down a little. ill have to try it one of these days(southern louisiana heat is harsh)

You can find what you're looking for ...........HERE!

This is a Johnson temperture controller thermostat that you can plug your refrig into and it will regulate the compressor to turn on and off at a much higher temp than what most refrig will maintain. I used one for about a year and it worked well. Had about a 3 to 4 degree swing.

Don't agree with the advice on adding computer fans for "cooling" purposes. The fans will move air but they will also generate heat. Next time you get a chance touch the back of a computer fan after its been running for a bit..... you'll see what I mean. Most people I know that have/are using the computer fans are doing so to move the air around in order to keep the humidity levels the same from top to bottom of the humidors.

Ditto. If you are going to be using a fan to circulate air, use a timer!

Wow.

I don’t look at the thread for a few days and Bam all sorts of replies.

First, thanks to everyone for the help.

G K R, have to agree with you on the “I thought this hobby was about relaxing” sentiments. Between the temperature issues and the unexplained wild swings in humidity I spend more time farting around with beads and such than enjoying the smokes.

I don’t know which is more frustrating, the temp issues I can deal with fairly easy more or less, the humidity swings and the lack of adjustment from the beads has me stumped. In the coolers I can go from stable for a few days to all of a sudden last night jumping up into 74% range over night in one and down to 62% in the other.

Is this sort of swing in any way normal? Should I not have panicked and swapped out some dry beads for completely saturated (all clear, no white) so fast in the high one? Am I just being paranoid? Am I loosing my mind spending all night reading about cigars? Oh, and I now agree Cbid is evil no doubt about it.

DevilsMilk I think you answered one of the above questions…paranoid. That is a decent price for a small wine cooler, I think I would allready need more than one though. The first thing I thought of was the max temp. listed on the specs also. I remember reading that in another thread and that same link to the regulator from Allofus123, interesting if you can’t find one with a little higher maximum temp.

Ok I will stop typing now (as he glances over at the RS wireless readout for the 1000 time tonight).

Thanks again for all the replies and/or suggestions; this is a great place with lots of helpful folks.

   This thread is cracking me up.

Here's what I did. I purchased a 24 bottle wine cellar with an adjustable thermostat from Sears, adjusted the thermostat and placed about 1/2# of beads inside. Add cigars, hygrometer/thermometer, and cedar trays. Works great!

I found the calibration screw for the thermostat and adjusted the temperature to a bit higher range and figured I open it enough to not need a fan.

I don't keep my nice desktop humidor in the frig, I just maintain it separately in a display case.

I keep on debating this idea of the wine refrigerator. I want to do this, but does the wine-frig suck out the humidity?

Ree

not at the 65-70 deg. range with beads. I've been watching it closely for 4 months now and its been very consitant. The fluctuation occurs when I place a new box in the fridge which then usually takes a couple of days to re-stabilize.
