It's fine the way it is.
You don't need to get too fancy.
You put plenty of info in there to catch people's attention.
Let it be.

Hey everyone - I haven't heard anything. . .
?????????????
Dave,

I sent you a PM on Feb 14, detailing my qualifications (graphic design and commercial prepress) and offering all the help you could handle. Since I never heard anything back, I figured you already had too many chefs stirring the pot.

If you still need help, just holler.

I really like the logo. I think it is great - and exactly for the reasons mentioned in the quote. But, shouldn't the letters be tilted a little bit (to match the angle of the monitor used to portray depth)?

Something like this

Except the letters need to be cleaned up a little in my tilted version. ;)

Hey Thanks for the Logo 101.

Clown, I am an Ex. Dir. of a Not-for profit.

I had a consultant say we needed a better logo that better represented our Org. Also recomended a name change. ..But since we have been around for years, although still relatively unknown regionally and no advertisement budget, I am hesitent to change things.

Seems I have some possible resources here. But I will not hog the thread with my problems.

Nice Thread. It is nice for family to help each other out.

Thanks for the compliments.

The only reason I'd (MY OPINION) be hesitant to tilt the letters in the monitor as suggested is, even with the color contrast, "DWF" and "computers" already are somewhat visually disconected in size and divied vertically by the right side of the monitor. Givent he existing partitioning, if the "DWF" were to follow the perspective of the monitor, it would suggest to the viewer's eyes that the element of the design it corresponds with is the monitor rather than "computers." I know it seems obvious to all of us, because we know how it should be read, but try to involved minimar work for the unfamilar customer to recognize/recall Dave's brand.

Cheers,
Dixie

Sorry for the lack of replies for a while. I have to admit, I kind of like Blair's idea of a slight tilt of the letters to match the monitor. Dixie? Don't suppose you can toss an example of that my way?

Also, lbrief is working on a design/layout of the ad, but I'm always willing to check out suggestions from others.

The deadline is quickly closing, so whatever is done kind of has to be done fast.

Thanks to everyone for their help!
Dave ;)

Working on it. Since you look like you might chose it, I'm going to go ahead and polish the designs.

I already done the tilting and I must admit it looks very good. Will update soon.

Cheers,
Dixie

As long as you're putting some additional work into, I have a request...

I know why you went with just one color - and I like the lilac color, it's very fitting for Lombard. But aside from this one professional printing, all other printings that contain this logo will be done by me personally. Even with my largest mailing (to all chamber of commerce members), I'm only printing up 300 copies. It's cheaper for me to do it myself. I guess what I'm saying is, if you chose just one color for the ease of printing... don't. I like big colorful logos, but that's just me.

Let's put it up to the rest of the crowd here... Should I stick with just black and lilac - or would you like to see additional colors involved. If so, where? Should the letters be colored, or should additional components be added?

Just my two cents, but then again, it will be MY logo, so maybe I can call it my three cents.
BTW, thanks for all the hard work you're putting into this!
Dave ;)

My graphic artist friend is delivering the logos she's made (plural -- I had her make a bunch) to me tonight. I'll mail 'em to you, Dave, and post them here in case others are interested -- fair enough?

Fair enough. If you want, I can post them - I have web space to spare.

Dave ;)

Alright, here are the logos my friend whipped up -- let me know what you think. Any of them can be refined if needs be (for instance, if it were me, I'd remove the purple fringe on the beanie) -- let me know which one you like, if any, and your comments.

Personally I like one of the beanie ones with it hanging off of the D -- dignified, but with a touch of nerdiness (which plays in well with the "nerd for hire" slogan). Just need to fix the purple "crown" around the beanie (it shouldn't be there).

WOW - you went above and beyond! Of those listed, I like the most square one with the beanie and the lower left one with the computer. I'm leaning towards a squarish design because of the current layout of my business cards (maybe that could be my next thread/challenge) I have my logo taking up the upper left hand corner of the card. Give me some time and I'll scan one to let you see what I'm talking about.

As far the computer logo, would it be possible to make it look like a more modern computer? That seems very reminicent of the old "standard computer clip art". Perhaps losing the 3 color thingy in the lower left corner of the monitor, sqaring out the edges of the screen, straightening the stand leading to the monitor to make it appear more like a modern LCD and altering the layout of the keys to be more similar to a modern keyboard. You know - little stuff like that :p

Anyone else have any opinions? What about these compared to Dixie's logo? Opinions? Suggestions? C'mon people, jump on into this conversation!

Dave :D

Yeah I'm having her redo the beanie ones right now, to remove the purple rim, and make the text black. The idea is a normal staid, good looking logo on its own (the black "DWF Computers") with the only color being the beanie -- a very staid logo spiced by with some colorful silliness.

I think that probably gets across what you're looking for in terms of a "professional nerd" -- and it would be very distinctive. I'll post the revised images as soon as she has them set.

As for the business card, usually business cards are designed around the company logo, not the other way around -- but I think most of the designs she made would work okay on a business card, and reproduce well small as well as large.

First, I definitely agree that the "DWF" part of this logo needs to be integrated into the perspective of the monitor; right now it just looks typed over.

I am a big fan of hand-drawn looking artwork (our company logo is done in a woodcut style), but I think that if you go that route, you have to go over the top in terms of making it clear what media is being used to draw the logo. Is it pen and ink? Crayon (should have texture to the strokes)? Magic marker? Calligraphy pen/brush (should see the brush strokes)?

It also should be very consistent in terms of the lighting -- and more than anything, it should be memorable and distinctive, capturing not only the spirit of your company, but also an image people will remember and associate with your company.

For me, this logo would not meet those requirements. I can see what he's going for, and I like the direction, but it doesn't quite seem to bring it all together. However ultimately it is *your* company -- you need to decide what look suits you best.

okay, were it me -- and again, it isn't, just giving my opinion -- I'd pick one of these. My choice would probably be the one in the bottom-left corner, because I like the idea of something colorful hanging off of a staid business logo, and the fact that "computers" is in upper-case there gives it clean lines everywhere except where the beanie is (again, playing off the same theme).

I *might* want the beanie to be a little higher up, covering a bit less of the D, and be a bit more off to the left too -- but the way it is now, the lines of the beanie match the lines of the upper-case D rather well, so I can see why she picked this location.

Second choice would probably be one of the two at the top. Chime in DaveWF, which do YOU like?

I like the changes (especially losing the purple crown). Just a thought... would it be possible to change the light blue text to a rich, dark blue - like the color of my shirt in my avatar? And so the middle of the beanie doesn't disappear, what about making the middle color (now dark blue) of the beanie, the purple (or maybe even LILAC??) that the crown used to be.

Not to push my luck or anything, but any chance of seeing the changes I suggested for the computer style logo? I realize that one isn't as easy to update.

Looking good so far.

As far as Dixie's logo, you kind of lost me with the pen style & lighting thing. I'm not artistic - at all. What exactly would you suggest to make it better?

BTW, Dixie: I think I like the font being used in Moki's logo above a little better then the one you used in yours (I think it was Terminal). How difficult would it be to change it?

Thanks to everyone!
Dave

Posting some revisions in a few minutes; this is how the collaborative process works, back and forth! :)

As for the logo typeface color, sure, we can try that -- tho my personal opinion is that keeping the logo text "DWF computers" black and staid and having the only color/fun be the beanie makes a stronger statement and visual look.
