The Macallan 25
Highland Single Malt
Scotch Whisky
On August 12th, 2006 I took my 1st sip of The Macallan 25 compliments of the MGM Grand High Limit Room, or as it's known in Las Vegas, The Mansion Casino. From the 1st taste I knew I had something special in my glass. I'll never forget the bartender taking out a good sized brandy snifter from under the bar and filling the glass about ½ full of this special dram. The next three hours were spent enjoying that single pour. I was less than ½ way through when he sent over a Davidoff Anniversario #2. It seems like only yesterday a great new friendship was born.
Since that time I have been back to Las Vegas about 10 times. During that span I have consumed so much Macallan 25 that the even the early morning crew of baccarat dealers affectionately refer to me as Scotchy. For whatever reason that nickname seems to have stuck, and to this day I am greeted that way just about every time I walk in the door.
According to their web site Macallan 25 is rich mahogany in color. Michael Jackson calls it full amber red. I don't know about all those fancy pants colors, but I do know is it goes well with the red display box that came with my bottle. Macallan 25 noses citrus, perhaps orange, you'll get a whiff of sherry followed by some light smoke. There is a noticeable spice beyond the hint cinnamon that seems to be in all of The Macallan I have tried, but I cannot figure out what it is exactly. The taste is very rich with dried fruits and more smoke. The sherry is there lingering in the background, but not in an overpowering way. The finish is my favorite of any scotch I have ever tried. Long and dry.
This is far and away my favorite scotch. The bottle says 43% ABV or 86 proof. I've only tried it neat but some say a drop or two of bottled water, or 1-2 ice cubes will bring out the flavor. Myself, I wouldn't dream of messing with this one. The only downfall I can think of is the price. In Arizona/Nevada expect to pay $400-$450 a bottle, or $47-$55 a glass in an upscale bar or restaurant.
To me this is the perfect drink for very special occasions. I often ask for this one over the 30 year old even when the drinks are complimentary. Don't get me wrong their 30 year old is awesome. However to me the 30 year old is a bit rough on the back of the throat after the 1st one. Can you say dry spice?
My bottle of Macallan 25 proudly sits in the top center of my collection.
I often refer to Mac 25 as liquid gold. Definitely heaven in a glass!
