So I got some cigars from a BOTL on these boards and I noticed one had a small amount of green mold (afer I stored it in my humi with all my others). So I ended up smoking it and all was well. Well, now I open up my humi last night and one of my beautiful Siglo IV's has some mold under where the band is and a little on one of the veins and some on the actual foot of the cigar in the middle. This is the green mold. Did this cigar "catch" it from the other? If so, how do I stop this from spreading? Will this smoke still be good or is it "dead"? As of right now I have put it back in it's individual Siglo box and moved it away from everything else. Humi is using Vipers beads at 65% and usually sitting at a temp of around 69-75 degrees. :angry:

Mold spreads via spores so it could have came from anywhere. The problem you have now is that you need to get rid of the spores. Take a look at the following links:

Thanks. Looks like I'll pull the infected cigar out and wipe down the humidor and put my smokes in a tupperwear container for a couple days. It looks like the mold only got to one smoke. Hopefully that is the case......

Yes, I'm not worried about the one smoke that was infected, more though on how to stop this from infecting anymore of the few smokes I have.

One of these posts from above says to wipe down each cigar and the humidor with alcohol???? That doesn't seem right...

With my issue, this humidor is only about a week old and the humidification device is brand new as well, there is absolutely no visible mold on or in the humidor.... It's a little different situation than the ones listed in the above articles. The infected stick will be removed to start out.
 
One other thing to add......make sure you don't have any sticks directly resting on your beads. If so, that could provide a LOT more humidity to the sticks closer (or on) the beads then those further away, leading to a higher risk of mold on those particular cigars. So even if the ambient humidity is at 65%, any cigar resting on or directly next to the beads could be getting a lot more than that.
 
The stick he's talking about came out of my chest humi here at work and was a Trinidad Reyes. It didn't have much age on it and I've got a couple left that look perfect. Damned if I can find a speck of mold or even discoloration anywhere in the chest which runs at a constant 62% at 75 degrees. Odd.

Will do. Given my situation (week old humidor and beads), do you think a wipe down, inspection of all the other sticks, and quarentining (sp?) the infected sticks should stop this outbreak?
 
It very well might. Remember, though, mold is a weird little bugger. THe spores really can get in and come from a lot of places.
Also, make sure your are really running the humidity that you think you are. Have you calibrated? My apologies if you already have. Did you do the "wipe down" seasoning of this humi? If so, and the stick was resting on the wood, it might have absorbed far more moisture than you would desire.
 
I've always thought that a little bit of green on Habanos was acceptable. ???

Yeah I don't really understand what happened. I had a group of Siglo's that all shipped together and I looked at them all when putting them in the humi, not a single mark on them. All Sam's sticks were shipped together, but each was individually wrapped. I noticed a little on the Trinidad about a week ago, smoked it a couple nights ago. Last night I popped open my humi and Siglo that was sitting right next to the Trinidad had a little mold. I clipped the foot and it looks as though I got rid of that area of mold. The rest of the mold is right under the band on the wrapper, so it looks like I may have salvaged the smoke. I have secluded it into another box. I inspected all the sticks, all are fine, no mold markings at all.

I really don't understand how the Trinidad may have gotten mold on it either. Sam is a stand up BOTL here and I by no means am condemming him on the situation. I'm very new to this hobby, and you live and learn. I'm going to keep an eye on everything for the next couple days and make sure it all looks good.

On another note, the Trinidad was a great small smoke if I do say so myself!!

The little bit of "green" is IN...not ON the Habanos, that is why we can not buy them in the states......jeeez, I thought everybody knew that :sign:

Well, looks like it just gave me a reason to smoke a Siglo. :sign: Off to cigar night tomorrow I go.
 
I had purchased some smokes recently and were shipped when we had like 4 straight days of rain. I talked with the seller and he did inspect the cigars before shipment and when I received them, they had a good amount of mold on it probably due to the weather during shipment. Not sure if that pertains to your situation but thought I would throw that out there.
 
After seeing this thread I went and inspected my humidor. It looks like a cohiba that I just put in there for a friend has a small green spot on it. I assume this is mold? All of my other cigars appear clean. Here is a crappy pic taken with a camera phone. You can see roughly where it is. It is perfectly visable however the camera doesn't really show it.

Poor quality picture, but that appears to be just a water spot, which sometimes occurs during the curing process of the leaf.
 
Hard to tell from the pic but probably just a sun spot on the wrapper.

Common and no bad effects on the smoke.
